What do I do about a sharp knee pain?

What do I do about a sharp knee pain?Im a cheerleader, and from what I recall I did nothing to badly injure my knee. Ive been having a sharp pain under my knee cap for about 1 month now. I only get it when I flex my leg, twist it, or extend my knee. I went to an athletic trainer, but his exercises only gave my leg more irritation. He said my hips were out of place and so was my patella. Im really desperate at this point and im wondering why this pain wont go away. What should I do, anything helps. Thank you.

You have patella tracking or patella-femoral problems. These take a while to heal, the pain isn't just going to go away in a month. Patella tracking problems are common in active female athletes due to the way we are built and move.

Anyways, if this is indeed what is wrong, hopefully the athletic trainer ruled out other knee injuries and confirmed your patella being out of place. (google patella femoral syndrome and see if it matches). You may also want to see an orthopedist, they are a MD who specializes in bone and joint problems.

Treatment should be icing, resting, stretching of the hamstrings and quads, strengthening of the quads, speficially the VMO, and the doctor may prescribe a NSAID.

You can see a physical therapist for treatment or continue to work with and be followed-up by the athletic trainer. Tell him/her the current treatment/exercises is making your knee worse.

Hips (and your feet too) can cause knee pain as they are all related. I'm not sure what the ATC meant by your hips being out of place, but you should probably do hip strengthening as well.

Good Luck :)
