How do I get over runners knee- do I keep running?I checked out runners world to get a good idea of the symptoms, and when I run, going on soft surfaces help to prevent the pain. Once I have a couple of miles done, the pain also subsides. What I don't get is whether I can continue running on the following days (after RICE) or whether I should stop running for some time until my knee gets back to normal.

I had something like runners knee and i kept running and doing P.E. and then it got so bad that i had to be put in Physical Therapy. I would stop running for a while and build up the strength in your leg, and if you get your leg really strong then it shouldn't hurt as much. You can do things like leg lifts to get your leg stronger.

I had shin splints while in high school cross country, and I had to take a month off from running. I read an article in runners world a few years ago that will help:
Keep on running,
Ignore the pain,
That's the thinking, of a man insane.

You need new shoes.
Trust me on this one.
If it hurts to walk down stairs, take a break and recover. Take Motrin daily to reduce the inflammation.

Stop running one week.
Weight training only.
Go to for treatment.

Check in with the doctor first to make sure you haven't worn down the tissue too much. It's probably just a stress injury, but those are some of the most annoying ones. Probably the reason the pain subsides is it goes into a numb-like state, or you just stop noticing because you're in the zone. If this has been bothering you for awhile take at least two weeks off. If you can't do that, then maybe cut back on your mileage to a minimum. Then at least you aren't breaking the habit.
