Its not really water its inflammation caused by the white blood cells, the body is repairing itself. And if she in fact did not bump her knee than the body is removing gases from it popping or some type of infection resided there.

Any number of things can cause it. I dislocated my knee and had water on the knee. I was also torn ligaments.
