How soon after a torn meniscus are you back to normal? My son torn his meniscus during football. He is scheduled to go in for an MRI on Monday and possibly have surgery to repair. He is devasted, and we are wondering we has had this happen and what was your prognosis after surgery?

It takes a good 6-8 months to come back to sports at a good condition. Your son will need to do a couple months of physical therapy but it will make him heal faster.Just try to listen to his doctors instructions.

If your son has a repair done, he is in for a long haul. My daughter has had both her knees repaired. After the surgery she was non weight bearing for somewhere between 6 & 8 weeks. After that she was partial weight bearing for another few weeks Then finally full weight bearing.
After the surgery she was also in a G11 knee brace. Her knee was locked straight for 2 weeks, then adjusted so she could bend her knee to 60 degrees, and then 2 weeks later to 90 degrees etc etc.
She also did physiotherapy the whole time.
She was off work for 3-4 months.
The first knee she had done about 10 years ago. This healed well, and is as good as new.
However the last surgery, done about 1 1/2 yrs ago, did not heal, and she will be getting the meniscus removed.
We were told at the beginning the surgery was about a 50/50 shot. For a repair to be an option it has to be in an area where there's some blood supply. The meniscus has very little blood supply to start with, and this is why alot of repairs don't take.
However if the meniscus is removed, it is an easy surgery, and the recovery is short. The problems with removal are long term. Our Dr has guaranteed osteo-arthiritis after my daughters removal.
My husband had all his meniscus removed when he was young. He now has severe osteo-arthritis, and is needing a total knee replacement.

Just to normal.. it varies from person to person, and surgery to surgery. With my first surgery, it took me about 4-5 weeks just to get off the crutches, and another 3 weeks to be able to walk again. With my 2nd surgery, it took me about 3-4 weeks to return to work, and with my most recent surgery, I was back at work 12 days later, and able to fully function about 4 weeks after that with no limp or anything like that. Just tell him not to stress, and to take things slow if he doesn't want to screw up the knee again.

Yes I tore my meniscus in the inner knee, left leg, and had surgery. I had to have physical therapy for about a month after that, maybe a month and a half. You cant walk well after surgery, but have to rest the leg first, and then afterward they want you to walk as much to get used to walking again, hence the therapy. It wasnt easy, and guess what? I guess I may have the same thing on my other leg, because it is very swollen around the knee and painful. I hopew its not this again. Good luck with your son on this.
