You absolutely must see an orthopedist and get a diagnosis for exactly what happened to your knee. Then they can either recommend surgery and/or physical therapy. Proper P.T. exercises can do amazing things. I had PT 10 years ago for a bad knee since insurance wouldn't cover surgery. I haven't used the daily exercises in at least 8 years and only recently have I begun to have problems again. You risk continually re-injuring your knee, or even permanently damaging it if you work it not knowing what the exact problem is. For the time being, you can alternate ice and heat to help with inflammation and sore tendons, massage sports cream into it, take anti-inflammatory medication (over the counter you're limited to ibuprofen--Advil--and naproxen--Aleve). Find the book "Tell Me Where it Hurts" by Peggy Brill. She is a physical therapist and there are probably some basic, safe exercises in it that can help strengthen muscles affecting the knee.
