Knee Disorders: what causes popping and cracking grinding in the knee?


what causes popping and cracking grinding in the knee?I have trouble with my right knee popping and grinding. If i put my hand on my knee I can actually feel the grinding when i bend and straighten my knee. Sometimes it really starts hurting but other times it doesnt hurt at all. But I always feel the grinding a popping. Anybody have any ideas what could be causing this?? Also my mother just had surgery on her knee for pretty much the same thing. Is this a hereditary thing?? Just wondering!
By way I just turned 40. I also have been taking osteo bi-flex and using arthritus stuff called Activon and neither seems to be helping much if at all.

There alot of reasons why that can happen... Try getting some vitamins and calcium. It happens most often becuase of cartalige wearing out.

i dont know, but im going to save this question because I have the same problem -the popping. When my knee grinds, I can hear it all the way up to my ears. Mine dont really hurt, but it is aggravating.

How old are you? Sounds like it could be arthritis, or a possible meniscal tear.

I dont know about popping at all, but my knee sort of "creaks" if that makes sense, which might be similar to your grinding. In my case, its a tendon issue- which a doctor explained to me. I'd say go see a doctor, and they can help you get around it (Ive got exercises and ice to relieve my problem, but aggravating it can cause cartillage damage that could take surgery). A doctor can tell you whats going on and if there are ways to avoid surgery, or if its nessecary like for your mom.

Its called crepitus and is perfectly normal...what you are hearing/feeling is the interaction of the underside of your knee cap and your femur (thigh bone). It may be painful when the cartilage on the underside of the knee cap begins to wear down and the surfaces of the bones rub...its called chondromalacia patellae. If you go to see a physical therapist they can usually help take some stress off of your knee by strengthening your leg muscles.
