Knee Disorders: What to wear when it's HOT in Paris?

What to wear when it's HOT in Paris?I'm going to spend 3-4 days in Paris in July. It does get warm there and I'd rather not sweat to death. Plus, I understand that air conditioning is not common. I've heard that I'll stick out like a sore thumb if I wear shorts, but what about long jean shorts that go just above the knee? How about Capris? Also, what Do men where when it's hot outside - please don't say khaki pants because my husband will never do it. Thanks!

I used to live in Paris and while I wore shorts sometimes, capri pants with a light shirt are just as cool, if not cooler. Jeans are heavy, even if they aren't full length.

Skirts and dresses are fine too and may be cooler than any shorts or capris.

I have to admit that I'd wear kind of "sturdy" shorts and only to my French classes. I was a snob because I wasn't a tourist but I don't recommend them if you are.

What is to be avoided is the "on the way to the gym" look. That will make you stick out and the French hate it. Sports clothes are for sports. Same goes for your backpack or knapsack.

Try to get comfortable walking shoes which you wouldn't use for any sport. I go for sturdy sandals more often, to keep my feet cool. No flip flops or flimsy sandals. You'll see French women in tiny sandals but they aren't walking everywhere all day like you will be.

I also feel more comfortable being a bit more covered up since Paris can be dirty and sticky in summer. Try to avoid really light pants. Darker shades will hide the dirt of the bench you just sat on. Light, loose tops also work better than anything in T-shirt material.

My husband, who's French, does wear shorts but longish ones with a buttoned shirt with a collar. Again, light material and it's more comfortable than a T.

Paris can be really uncomfortable in the heat but it can also rain in the summer so pack something for that (not just an umbrella, which often don't work in crowds).

Just to add to Capri's very good explanation, you - and your husband - can also wear cotton trousers, light enough not to be too hot, perspiration absorbant, easily washable. They are a good substitute for jeans in comfort and nice enough to pass for normal city wear.
