Protect Your Knees with a Range of Knee Supports

Article by Toby Dicks

Millions of people around the world enjoy the many benefits that come with being involved in sports. Not only are there the health benefits that come with being physically active, but playing sport can give people a sense of purpose and an enjoyment in doing something they love regardless of the level of competition. However, being involved in very physically demanding sports is not without its risks and one area of the body that is particularly prone to stress and injury is the knee. Knee braces and supports provide good protection to the knee area and not only help prevent injuries but can also allow people who suffer from a niggling knee problem to continue playing their sport while minimising the risk of further damage.

Knee supports come in a variety of designs and choosing the right one for you will ultimately depend on the sort of protection you need and/ or the type and severity of the knee injury you are suffering from. Before outlining the range of supports available it is important to stress the need for you to seek medical advice in regard to the protection of your knees as selecting the wrong type of support can indeed result in more harm than good.

The most common type of support are the standard knee supports. These provide minimum support to the knee area and allow heat to be retained around this area of the leg during periods of physical activity. They are available at most pharmacies and convenience stores and are generally used as a preventative measure.

Stabilised supports provide more protection than the standard ones as they have additional straps for greater stability without the restriction of a metal hinge. These products help stabilise the knee cap by surrounding the patella and keeping in place during a range of movements. There are also a range of support and straps that specifically target the patella and these are used by people who have problems with their knee caps.

Hinged braces are the most supportive of all. These braces have metal hinges on either side and are generally used in the treatment of serious knee injuries or following knee surgery. These supports severely restrict the movement of the knee and so are not particularly suitable for those people who require support while playing sport.

Knee injuries are perhaps the most common of all sporting injuries and once you have sustained such an injury the chance of it recurring is high simply because it is a part of the body that we just can't avoid placing pressure on. It is extremely important that you do all you can to protect your knees and if you are someone who lives for your sport, wearing a good quality brace or support can help reduce your risk of serious knee damage.
