Can I do yoga with really arthritic knees>?I can't do much that involves impact -- walking, running, calisthenics are all out, but I've done yoga in the past. Would there be any benefit to trying exercises that don't involve the knees -- are there any, in fact?

I have rheumatoid arthritis and it's difficult to keep the flare ups away. The ONE thing I've discovered that helps is exercise. I know it's difficult but it does improve the well being of your joints. Yoga would be perfect. I do intense hiking (but I'm only 20, so it's easier). Good luck. I hope this has helped.

Yes, and they have beginner's yoga as well as Pilates. You can go at your own pace and I know the Pilates ones give you an alternative way to do the exercises so that you're comfortable.

Of course, I'd recommend you check with your physician first, but many forms of yoga are gentle, aimed only at healing type excercises.
I started yoga just by buying a "Yoga for Beginners" DVD. I had to skip several of the excercises at first, but found that with a little practice and patience, Igot the hang of it. I'd recommend giving it a try.

Have scientific studies of yoga been done in arthritis patients? While there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence of the benefits of yoga (just visit any yoga studio), to date only a handful of scientific studies have been conducted on persons with OA and RA (though several more are currently underway). These early studies have shown promising results with some improvement in joint health, physical functioning, and mental/emotional well-being(23-25). Perhaps most importantly, yoga has an important positive effect on quality of life. People with arthritis may also enjoy yoga more than traditional forms of exercise, and exercise enjoyment is an important predictor of adherence(26, 27). This is particularly important considering that, on average, 50% of sedentary individuals will drop out of exercise within 6 months(28).
