chronic knee stiffness and pain?Well I'm 20 years old, male, run 2-5 times per week, eat fairly healthy, work about 30 hours per week (mostly standing).
I've had joint pain since I was around 11-12 years old. It started just with ankle pain, spread to my knees. Recently (past 1-2 years) it has spread to my hips a little, as sometimes I wake up with stiff hips.
Even more recently, (past week or two) I've been waking up with knee pain that is more severe than normal, and it takes me a minute or two to get out of bed because of said pain. Is this normal wear and tear, or should I be doing something different? OR seeking dr.'s advice?
Thanks for the swimming info guys. I would love to swim more, but have little ready access to a pool or lake. This summer I'll hopefully be able to swim about once a week if not more.
Also--I forgot to mention that I have orthodics. I've been using them for about 2.5 to 3 years, and have gotten a couple new pairs to make sure they were still correctly fitting and stuff. They help a bit, but the pain overall is getting worse...

You are young, so before you go to a doctor you could try taking a break from running. Running is hard on the ankles, knees, hips, back, etc. Try taking a few weeks off, then maybe start up with swimming instead of running.
I interned with an orthopedic surgeon, he was a runner too. But he used to chuckle when he saw joggers, "There goes another potential customer." :/

Water exercising is much less stress on your joints. The water makes your body seem weightless with the buoyancy & is excellent for people with joint issues. Even if you don't swim, just walking around in the water is beneficial.
You might invest in some good, quality orthotics arch supports to slip into your shoes. They will help align your heels, ankles, knee's & spine as you walk & stand.
