IF A FIRST XRAY didn´t show any problem with knee joint, A SECOND ONE AFTER 6 MONTHS would show something?I fell on my knee about 6 months ago. The immediate (after a couple hours) XRAY didn´t show any problem with my knee bones. Now my doctor wants to do a second one claiming that the first XRAY is too old. I don´t know if the results would be different considering the time and I´m worried because doctors on my hospital town tend to refuse to order MRIs because the health plan is paid by the government and the resources are limited. I can´t continue any longer with frequent knee pain and just receiving pain killers and XRAYS. Please tell me what you think: is logical to order a second XRAY or they are just prolongating a MRI test.
*I´m not sure but I think that much XRAYS can have side effects or something, is that true if they do me two in the same year?

all a second xray would show you and this is a maybe, is the development of scar tissue so it since the problem hasn't gone away it sounds like they dont want to do the MRI which is what you really need, as far as side effects dont worry about it, its not huge like a chest xray and 2 is 6 months isn't bad at all, think of what they do when you go to the dentist, its about that, sometimes more so don't worry

Get the MRI. If you're in that much pain six months after an accident, you owe it to your future health to do all you can to determine whether or not you'll be able to walk in ten years, let alone sit down a year from now.
Personal note... about an hour after I broke my tailbone, it didn't exactly show up well on the x-ray because of the swelling... 24 hours later, it was clearly broken.

Ask your doctor to call your insurance and make arrangements for an MRI. An x-ray will show
somewhat but an MRI will show your knee more clearly. Personally, I think you should ask for a referral to either an orthopedic surgeon or an
orthopedic doctor. They specialize in fractures.

Two knee x-rays in a year is not enough ionizing radiation to be concerned. People can and do have many more exams than that at one time and through out the year with no ill effect. The benefits of the x-rays far out weigh the minimal risk when you consider the amount of pain you are in. A second set of x-rays is a prudent way to go. Any radiologist reading an MRI would want more a current plain film exam (x-ray)than one done 6 months ago. And most insurances will not pay for an MRI without first having a plain film exam because there's a potiental that something may be diagnosable from repeating the x-rays and the cost of the MRI may be unnecessary. That aside, it is not uncommon to repeat x-ray exams later if there is still pain just because it can take awhile for some injuries/illnesses to show up. Good luck.
Hi,I did the following:
Low Back Pain- Sacroiliac Joint Animation - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim, MD
Educational video describing the sacroiliac joint as a source of low back pain. Due to the proximity of the sacroiliac joint to the hip and the spine, pain of SI joint origin may be attributed to a hip or spine condition rather than the sacroiliac joint itself. SI joint pain is an unappreciated problem causing low back pain . Clinical and radiological evaluation is not usually reliable. The only reliable method for diagnosing SI joint pain is by injection.
