If your athletic it could be Osgood-Schlatter Disease, dont worry it isnt as bad as it sounds, its bassicly growing pains. I had to take a few weeks out of training and because i went to the doctors about it stopped me gaining entry into the Armed Forces, so just be carefull wheter to go to the doctors or not.

When ever we introduce pain to our body, it seems the tendons react most to it by recoiling, for lack of a better term, and shorten themselves in some attempt to protect the body. The problem is they get locked there and need to be released. Your kneecap is no different. This is a way to get rid of that pain. I don't know if you can do it by yourself or if you may need to have someone help you. It takes a lot of pressure to be applied to make it work well. Please follow carefully to make it work.
Kneecap: (Use a chair that has no cross members on it.)
While sitting start with your leg out in front of you extended out to a comfortable length. Wrap your hands around it so you have a good two inches working area. Place your thumbs about two inches behind your knee and press into the top middle of your leg hard and hold. Relax. After 30 seconds, slowly slide that leg back until it is pulled up under the chair as far as you can make it go. Then release the pressure but hold your leg there for one minute longer.
