Ligament Surgery is never the First answer an orthopedic surgeon should ever give you! The Doc is Right, he /she need to try to fix the Ligament first with Physical Therapy.

Ligament Surgery can go very wrong where you can never move that joint again. I can Dislocate and/or Sub-Lux (ball and Socket joint don't completely separate) every joint I have. I have a condition called Ligamentous Laxity this can be localized or whole body, like me. I have to keep my Muscles built up its what holds every thing in place. Not many doctors even know about it, I normally have to tell them about it, if there not an orthopedic surgeon.

If you family member has any other loose joints (ie: being able to bend your thumb to you wrist front or back) this would be the Worst Surgery for them to have. Only if you have "normal" Ligament function, is it even slightly recommended.

Sad story, my friend tor her ACL in high school like 3 times, because she didn't go to Physical Therapy, it never healed right and she had to have surgery. Well her knee can only bend now about 3 inches. they have tried to fix it many times. I think she is able to bend it 5 inch's now? she has a limp, back problems of every kind, developed Scoliosis nice long list I don't like to think about.

As far as a job, if its a sitting job, they should not have an issue...anything where they have to be on there feet might have an issue, especially health wise.

Best Wish's,
