What type of doctor does one see for knee trouble (locking and pain)?

What type of doctor does one see for knee trouble (locking and pain)?My knee locks during sleep. Unbending it is very painful and wakes me up. Also if I sit for extended periods with it bent, it hurts to unbend. Further it has started hurting on the uphill and downhill portions of my runs (but flat land is fine). I have no idea what type of doctor to make an appointment with. General, sports med, etc?
