Converting disorder - My son has leg and knee pain?Anyone heard of this? My child has stressful events and converts this into physical pain. Any stories of other families facing this? So, the pain is real. But, not medically based. So, in affect - the pain is not real and brought on by some trauma.

IT is very normal when you are stressed for your body to turn that stress into pain. My dad was constantly taking me tot he doctor when I was little because stress would make my stomach, shoulders, and back hurt. I started an anti anxiety medication when I was 17 and it helped a lot. This is also the reason that medications like Cymbalta are out. It is an anti depressant that also helps with the physical pain of depression and anxiety.

I wish i would of seen this sooner I am a Medical professional and I have the same issue. What happens it's not just stress alone it is a series of issues, Is it mainly his knee? If so is it on the sides or directly under the knee cap? If its the leg is it the calf muscle or the shin? If the answer to all of those is a answer that sounds like he is trying to say it all over then it's psychogenic pain disorder. It's very treatable either way. My suggestion is have him take at least a week off from school, sports, work, relationships (boyfriend/girlfriend), also take time away from most issues allow him to do what he feels makes him most relaxed. If the pain is still accruing then it is not psychogenic pain disorder it is something else. Has he gained weight here lately? Please respond to me via email as soon as possible so i can further assist. I was told when i was younger it was not medically proven that there was an issue for me to have pain, yet if there is pain there is an issue no matter what, it can be a series of issues. My story is I ended up on a cane at 20 years old due to pains that where caused by issues that couldn't be medicaly seen till it was to late and they where in to the knee surgery trying to fix what should of never happened. I am still currently on a cane.
