Cruciate knee ligament injury in dogs?Has anyone had a dog with a cruciate ligament injury to the knee? If so, what was the form of treatment.

yes...My rottie had to have both his operated on. It started out w/ him limping. He never whined or cried. I took him to the vet and they did a hip displacia test on him. It was negative. Then they checked his knee. They told me his knee and ligament didn't look good and he was going to have to go thru surgery. They tried recommending me to a specialist where it was going to cost $ 2000-$ 2500 for a full knee replacement. I went and got another opinion.

I had another vet look at him, the vet explained to me he would (basically) replace his ligiment w/ a very strong rubber band. He did say that the only risk would be that he may have to have it operated on again if the rubber band thing gave out. Also it was WAY cheaper....it cost me $ 600 (each leg).

Also if you have one knee operation you will have to have the other knee operated on too. After his surgery 6-8 months after, he started limping on the other knee. I took him back to the vet and they told me 90-95% of the time if you have knee surgery on one leg the other will have to be operated on too. It is also best to do the surgeries as early as possible b/c the longer you wait the more prone to arthritis the dog will be.

This has been 3 years ago and he is healthy, happy, and walks normal.

It depends how bad it is, minor cases can be treated with crate rest and anti-inflammatories, serious ones need (expensive) surgery and rehab.

Consult with your vet.

It depends on how bad the injury is. Usually surgery is done if the ligament is completely torn. If it is just slightly torn then anti-inflammatory medication is given and the dog must be confined to a small area so it does not further injure the ligament.
This happened to one of my dog's and the surgery was about $ 1,200 (not including x-rays and medication)- there are numerous groups/organizations that help people pay for emergency surgeries for their pet's if they cannot afford them. Ask your vet for any references or check online.
