exercise and knee pain--how can i slim my thighs without squats?I have patellofemoral pain syndrome (informally known as 'runners knee'), which basically means i have knee pain due to a variety of factors. i'm in shape but because i cannot do squat exercises, my thighs are slightly bigger than they should be. the last time i did squats, my knee pain became so bad i couldn't even get through a four hour shift at work (i'm in retail and i stand/walk all day).
what exercises can i do to get my thighs in shape that don't include squats, anything remotely like a squat, jumping jacks or other knee pain-inducing things?
I do not have access to a gym or a pool. i'm looking for things i can do at home. thankyou :)

My uncle sent me this book for my 13th birthday. he was kind of a dick, but it was still really useful

Do isometrics. Pull in the thighs, the adductors and hold but without engaging the knees. You have to isolate the muscles. For the outer thigh, do leg lifts, straight leg. For knee pain, see an orthopedist and get fixed.
