Why do I have pain under my kneecap when I play basketball?During a workout or while playing basketball the tendon right below my kneecap really hurts. It is a very sharp pain and makes it very hard to cut or jump with my left leg. It has been hurting like this for about 2 years and I tried taking time off to heal it but when I started playing again it came back. As I am trying to play basketball in college I need to figure out how to heal this. Any suggestions or has anyone gone through this?

You said it's been like that for 2 years? That's not normal. You should see a doctor and get it x-rayed.

It could be patellar tendonitis or jumpers knee. Unfortunately the doctors are going to tell you to rest it. I have been diagnosed with it and was told if it doesn't go away after six months it becomes a chronic condition and needs surgical intervention. Im having surgery on the 30th.
I would suggest after you work out or play sports to ice it for 20 min and rest it. You also need to work on strengthening the muscles around the knee. That will help support it. Also you can get a patellar strap at a store like Walmart or a drug store. That applies pressure to the tendon and takes some of the weight of the body off of it.
I would definitely suggest going to a doctor just to get it checked out.

It's petellar tendonitis. I have the same thing in both my knees. Try to make sure you get warmed up good before you play basketball and stretch it well also. Additionally, after you play try to ice it for awhile.
