Tips for overcoming knee pain when running?I took karate for about 9yrs and I think that's what originally messed up my knees. They don't hurt on a regular basis, though. Only if I run.
I run on the treadmill (since outside would hurt them too much) and I love doing long-distance running. BUT it annoys me that I have to stop--not because I'm tired--but because of my knees.
Any advice you can give me?
I tried using one of those slip-on supporters (with the hole in the knee part) and that sucked. And I'm thinking of trying just the band supporters (like one band around a certain part and it's supposed to help).
************I warm up and cool down thoroughly enough, but is there anything else you found helpful?

If it is a pain just above the kneecap it could be tendonitis, which can definitely reduce by doing a simple exercise everyday. Put some weight on your foot, straighten your leg, and lift the weight for a bunch of reps. It strengthens your leg in the right places and holds the tendon in place much better.
If it's a problem with the joint itself, I'd suggest a brace and try to run on the grass The softer surface is soooo much better for the joints than a hard cement surface.
Hi,I did the following:
Early Diagnosis of Knee OA with Dr. John Esdaile (Part 2 of 2)
After viewing the video, please take the time to complete our survey here: www.surveymonkey.com Arthritis Consumer Experts created a three-part series of web workshops on the importance of early diagnosis, exercise, and nutrition in slowing the progression of osteoarthritis or reducing the pain. This first workshop (split into 2 parts) in the series titled Do I have arthritis and what do I do about it? is presented by internationally respected rheumatologist and Scientific Director at the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada, Dr. John Esdaile. In it, he describes early osteoarthritis and lists the factors that are linked to an increased risk of developing it. Dr. Esdaile discusses how early osteoarthritis can be diagnosed, citing research that examines barriers to diagnosing early osteoarthritis. Also, he talks about the importance of early diagnosis in treating and managing osteoarthritis, leading to the topics of the two web workshops that follow, which are nutrition and exercise for those living with osteoarthritis.
