You should try exercising in water at the YMCA or other facility. There are many classes available to you including instructions for arms and legs.Water is much less strain on your knees..

Exercises for the muscles that surround the knee include Quadriceps strengthening exercises, hamstring strengthening exercises, and calf strengthening exercises. Increasing muscle endurance. But the fact is that just as critical as the overall strength, is the endurance of these muscles. Without endurance, these muscles will quickly fatigue.
Increasing endurance is best accomplished with low-impact cardiovascular activities, among the best of which is riding a stationary bicycle. Also excellent are swimming or other pool workouts. Walking is an OK exercise, but higher impact on the knees. If you must walk or do other high impact sports, try to also incorporate some cycling and swimming.
I hope this helps you. And good luck.

I agree with sunshine & imsety, but unfortunately bike riding & stairs are the activities you want to stay away from, especially resistive bike riding, stationary or a real bike...stiff knees like movement, esp non-resistive, but strengthening is very important since the stronger the muscles, the less force on the joints;; warm showers are good also, as the same for aquatics;; & cold pack applications work to reduce the inflammation to the knees causing the stiffness;; a good trick in the morning is to sit @ the edge of the bed & just bounce, for about 30secs>1min, this 'lubricates' the joint by the small perturbances, & helps work out some of the stiffness associated with not moving those knees through the night;; helps that initial stiffness in the am...good luck...
