What causes pain in the knee & hip at the same time?

What causes pain in the knee & hip at the same time?I have extreme pain in my outer hip and in my knee. I know I need to go to the doctor but I am wondering if anyone knows what could be causing this and what is the best type of doctor to see. Would a chiropractor be my first stop to check for syatica (sp?)?
Thanks to anyone who can give input.

no, an othopedic doc will help greater than a chiro @ this time;; ya really don't wanna waste your time on a chiro when it sounds more ortho;; much like if you can avoid seeing your GP when it's more specialized;; your knee can be hurting because of what you are doing to your hip;; your hip can be hurting for what you are doing to your knee;; remember that old little song, your knee bone's connected to your thigh bone...;; well, they play on ea other when talking gravity, alignment, & simply the 'way' you walk..got a problem in one area, it's gonna affect the next, & the next, & so on;; you've gotten 2 joints involved @ this time...coulda done damage to both..could be one having effects on the other;; the reason for not seeing a chiro, or that it 'may' be sciatica..you complain of pain @ the specific joints, not the pathway...orthopod!! good luck!!

You could potentially have an issue with your iliotibial band which runs down the lateral part of your leg. A chiropractor could relieve some of the pain by realigning your hips, but I would recommend going to see an orthopedic specialist. Speaking from experience, (I have snapping hip syndrome or "Dancer's Hip" caused by the snapping of my iliosoas tendon) it's your best option to get it checked out because living with pain gets exhausting.
