What is the correct way to use your knee muscles when going DOWN stairs?I have arthritis and fibromyalgia. I don't lilke going down stairs one step at a time and holding on sideways. The way I do it might be making my condition worse. Maybe someone in the physical therapy field would tell me the correct way to use my muscles. Please. And thank you in advance.

At one time doctors would take out cartilege from knees because they thought this would ease knew pain, so you need to research this yourself without trusting blindly.
I assume you're taking chondrotin, glucosimine, msm. Going down stairs is an unnatural motion for your body so why not use a ramp if possible. If not one at a time and holding a support seems reasonable.

Going down the stairs the "normal way" requires a lot of eccentric quad control. Basically, this requires your quad muscle to lengthen as you decend in order to control the effects of gravity. This is opposite to going up the stairs where your quad muscle shortens each time it propells you up the stair. Being able to descend the stairs normally requires you to strengthen the muscles in an eccentric manner..."step downs" are a good exercise to practice as well as focusing on the "lowering" phase during a leg press machine.
However, for those with conditions outside what can be corrected by a strengthening program, the technique of going down the stairs sideways is common; and for the most part, there is nothing really wrong with it. If you want to avoid this pattern, however, descending the stairs backwards while holding the rail is another option. It still requires an eccentric contraction, but not as much as when you go forward. If you have good balance, this is a potential option for you besides descending sideways which shouldn't put too much lateral force on the knee.
Strengthening programs are imperitive to managing arthritis and fibromyalgia, however, when the pain is really too much to bear, compensatory strategies can really be helpful for getting through your day.
Best wishes.
