How do I prevent knee injuries while running?

How do I prevent knee injuries while running?About a month ago, I started running on a treadmill to get in shape. At first, I ran about 2 miles in 30 minutes, though I now run about 5k in 40. For the past couple of days, however, my right knee (towards the left/inner side) starts to hurt when I run. The pain is not intense, but I'm worried that I might be doing damage to my knee. Any ideas on how to stop the pain and prevent any major injuries?

A few tips for you:

Try running outside on a variety of surfaces. Grass and woodland paths are good for lessening the impact.
Try a low impact sport on some days (eg swimming) and remember to include rest days.
Check your running technique - its easy for those new to running to get in the bad habit of developing a plodding motion. Try to ensure you have a smooth, striding pace, with one step rolling onto the next.

Ice your knee or get a knee brace..this worked for me.

Definately ice it when it hurts, but you should try running on grass rather than on the road or the treadmill. Also make sure you land on your heel and roll your foot onto your toe. Make sure you are also wearing good running shoes. If your knee hurts for much longer you should get it checked out because you don't want do any damage to your knee. God luck running!

Well your pace is not great so its not likely to be your stride.
If your stride is too long in can create extra pressure on your knees.
PS I( would never ever run on a treadmill).Really not healthy.
Also check the way you sit........any imbablance in the way you sit.....for example sitting with a leg underneath yourself will create a weakness in that leg. At rest you would be stretching one knee and not the other. Its normally an inbalance in the way you do things as opposed to damaging yourself from running. Running only builds strength not the other way round.
For over 2 million years people like dogs cantered from a to b........its only in the last 100,00 years we have learned to walk.........so its more natural to run than it tis to walk.
Whats not natural is for us to be big fat folk.(like me)........hence issues with running etc.
Having said that Ive never had any injury in 36 years of running(and I never warm up).

if i were u i would take a couple days off and rest ur knee, also apply some ice and heat wraps on it 2 prevent any stiffness and/or swelling..if the pain persists u might want 2 go 2 the orthopedic dr. 2 check it out or get an m.r.i. 2 make sure nothing is damaged. also make sure u stretch before and after ur run. hope it helps
