Can I stop my inflamed knee from popping?

Can I stop my inflamed knee from popping? After a long marching band season my knee became inflamed. I have some things to do to help the inflammation, including medicine (that i still have to pick up) and icing and a couple exersizes to do to help the pain.

However my question is this; whenever i straighten my leg from a bent position, my knee pops. This is occasionally minorly painful, but mostly just awkward. Will this go away on its on? Is there something I can do to get rid of it, or will I be stuck with it for good?

Check with a doctor. I ended up seeing a doctor, getting xrays, then seeing a physical therapist.

If its similar to what I had, the popping noise / sensation, is the knee cap sliding back into place.

The knee cap has a ridge in the middle, that keeps the knee cap in line with the dog bone.

What happens is one side of your leg muscles is stronger than the other. When your leg is relaxed, the stronger muscle pulls the knee cap in one direction, which pulls the ridge out of alignment. When you use the knee, the weak muscle does its thing and pulls the knee cap back into place. The ridge rides over the dog bone, and slips back into place. Hence the pop. ***shudders***

The popping causes inflammation behind the knee cap, which doesn't heal quickly.

An easy way to check this is to sit up on the floor. Lay your legs straight out. Check to see if there is lateral movement in the knee cap.

My physical therapist had me lay down, and attach small ankle weights, about 5 lbs on my ankles. Its about low impact, and basic strengthening of the muscles.

Then I would do leg raises, pointing the toes in the direction of the weaker muscles, basically causing the weaker muscles to get used. Then do a bunch of leg raises.

That was my situation. Knees are complicated and should have an expert look at them.
