I need a type of exercise I can do with arthritic knees.?

I need a type of exercise I can do with arthritic knees.?I am 43, overweight, and out of shape. My doctor tells me that its not "if" but "when" I'll need knee replacement surgeries in both knees. I desperately need to exercise and lose weight, but my knees are so painful, its difficult. Walking/running is out of the question. Swimming or other types of water activity would be great, but impractical - I don't have convenient access to a pool.
When I say walking/jogging is out of the question, I mean by doctor's orders. My doctor has instructed me not to walk/jog or do stair climbers as exercise. Its not that I don't want to, or that it hurts, its that my doc says 'no' to walking.

aleve before you workout in the water. that is best for sore muscles and is a good cardie workout

I'm glad you asked that question. I am 50 and have diabetic neuropathy in both legs. Get to your doc and ask for some TED hose and wear them at bedtime to improve circulation. Also, as painful as it may seem, walk. Walk a little every day
( don't start out on a marathon) and watch your sugar and starch levels, ( carbs). Also, drink plenty of H2O to hydrate your sore muscles. All in good time, my dear, all in good time. Aleve does wonders too.
Cut back on processed foods, eat fresh and frozen and stay away from boxed and canned foods.. remember, too much of a "good" thing is always a bad thing.

I know exactly how you feel and it seems impossible doesn't it.

I live with Rheumatoid Arthritis and have many joints that were affected, knees included.

Because of this I'm going to be a little harsh, but please understand that it comes only from a "caring place".

If you are overweight then obviously there are many things you can do to improve your diet. Watching what you eat each day can and will effect your weight and the arthritis.

Our joints need proper nutrition and hydration in order to remain functioning well.

Certain foods (blueberries, celery, turmeric) are natural anti inflammatories and highly recommended.

Drinking 1/2 your body weight (in ounces) of water every day will help to lubricate your joints as well as reduce your appetite and aid in weight loss.

Every extra pound you carry around hurts your joints more than is necessary.

While your knees are inflamed weight bearing exercise is a challenge so you could resort to watching wheel chair exercises and doing those each day while your main focus is on improving your diet to reduce the weight.

I have written more about foods, as well as a detox diet that might interest you on my website, http://www.livingwithrheumatoidarthritis.com/DetoxDiet.html

I hope this helps, I know how challenging this all is.

The thing I do to keep on track is remind myself, if I eat that (treat) I will hurt, is it worth it to me? Almost everytime the answer is NO so I am able to, without feeling cheated, say no to the offending food.

Of course there is the occassional time I say, yes it's worth it this time and that's ok.

Good Luck to you!
