What causes pain above both knees when standing up?In the past few weeks I have had severe upper knee pain. The pain is only evident when I am going to stand from a sitting position. I am in my early forties and not obese. I can't figure this out.

There is a natural herb that helps keep joints lubricated.
I can't remember the name but the same herb is found in beer.
I prefer to take mine in liquid form.

Probably a cartilage problem where it has deteriorated to a point where now the bone is rubbing up against bone. Have you participated in a lot of sports? Upper knee pain is predominantly associated with athletes who must perform a lot of cutting.

It could be arthritis. I suggest you have it checked by an orthopedic doctor. Could nothing but it could something serious,

I was going to make a joke but you elaborated enough in the additional details to make my joking about it seem inappropriate.
None of us are health care professionals, and that's who you need to see. Several of the possibilities brought up here are valid, unfortunately the treatments for them vary...and unless you know which diagnosis is correct, any treatment could aggravate the situation. Bottom line, only a doctor can say for sure what the problem is. Go see one.
