Hmm cane and crutches would be used for any type of injury where you need support for your knee. Crutches would more be used for non-weight bearing.
So, cane is probably used when weight-bearing is allowed so not for a broke bone, and people often use them for support and to alleviate pain. So it can be used after any surgery really after they are allowed to put weight on their leg.
My aunt used one after she had a knee-replacement.
older folks use them for support if their knee is arthritic and in poor shape.
hope i have helped

sorta don't really get your question;; & that's what I do all day is assess people's functional mobility;; you use a cane when your balance suffers for multiple reasons;; when you have surgery to your knee, most people do not initiate their gait with a cane, it's a progressive tool;; usually start with crutches or a walker;; by the time you can put ~90% of your weight through that involved leg, you can use a cane, as long as it's without gait disturbance;; any gait disturbance will affect other parts of your body besides the involved leg;;so always looking for a smooth, "normal" gait;; if can't get that with a cane, then usually bilateral support is required (like a walker or crutches)...& that's with a knee "problem";; maybe the coach sees you limping??

One of the most common reasons people are on a straight cane is due to arthritis which is wear and tear of a joint. A cane helps take pressure off the affected joint. Poor balance or weakness is another reason why people may use a cane. As far as surgeries go: total knee or hip replacement are the more common surgeries that result in people using a cane for a short while. Many times after surgery people with use a crutch rather than a cane.
Hope that helps.
