My knee has locked, any ideas what may have happened?I got up from the settee last night and my knee locked, now i can't straighten it and its very painful. I can't walk or put any weight on the leg, any ideas what may have happened?

you've probably got something physically blocking normal knee motion, and the usual cause is a meniscus tear. it's a common football injury, and treatment is usually day surgery for an arthroscopy to clean up the tear.

Yep sounds like there is something that is stopping the knee from moving. With me it was, at from time to time still is cartliage, you need to get an appt to see a doc so that they can tell you for sure what is going on.

Woffy, the answer is that no one really knows at this point without a MRI scan. Based on what you have stated it would appear to be a meniscal tear. This will be confirmed by the scan. The latest research states not to have any surgical procedures on the knee unless it is locked such as you state. Before you try the procedure do try a course of physical therapy. It can only help whether or not it ultimately works. If it is successful then there will be no need for the surgery. If it doesn't work then at worst you have strengthened the leg which will make the recovery that much easier and quicker. Start off by seeing an orthopedist.
