You need anti-inflammatories (remember to take them only with food as they are hard on the stomach lining).
If your knee is painful so frequently, it may be time to consult an Orthopod with a view to getting a kneed replacement.
My Mom had two kneed replacements (one on each knee) and never looked back - tiny little scar which did not even show it was in the crease of the knee.
You may want to consider it and get yourself free of pain and the ravages of painkillers taken over a long time!

For arthritis I use 800mg Ibuprofen four times a day, or as needed for pain. I have it in the base of my thumb, middle of left hand, lumbar, lower thorax. I just had my right hip joint replaced in April.
If it doesn't work for you at the 200mg, over the counter level, you can ask your physician to script you for the stronger ones.
I also use one Vicoprofen (200mg Ibuprofen with 7.5mg Hydrocodone) to ease my joint pain so I can sleep at night.
Inflamation and swelling of joints is what mostly bothers me; and the nice thing about Ibuprofen is that it not only eases pain, but it reduces inflamation. And the Ibuprofen is the only pain medication I've found that does both.
