Cause of knee stiffness/pain?I sometimes wake up in the morning with a really stiff knee and it's almost agony to stretch it out, does anyone know what could be causing this? I'm only 19 and I sleep with bent legs but it only happens in one knee and I move often while sleeping.

That has to do with your tendons. For some reason they will shorten up and then instead of allowing the kneecap to glide over your knee, it is pulled into it and then the pain comes. Here is how you can release the tendon that is causing this pain:
Kneecap: (Use a chair that has no cross members on it.)
While sitting start with your leg out in front of you extended out to a comfortable length. Wrap your hands around it so you have a good two inches working area. Place your thumbs about two inches behind your knee and press into the top middle of your leg hard and hold. Relax. After 30 seconds, slowly slide that leg back until it is pulled up under the chair as far as you can make it go. Then release the pressure but hold your leg there for one minute longer.

I know that you are young but it might be the start of arthritis. I was diagnosed with it in both of my knees at 15 years old. And the mornings are always the worst (this morning in fact was HORRIBLE) one thing that I have found to help with the stiffness in the morning was I set my alarm about 30 minutes ahead of when i wanted to get up. I would keep a heating pad right by the bed, when the alarm went off I turned on the heating pad and wrapped it around my knees so that the heat would help with the stiffness.

time to get the knee checked by the doc;; could be a million & one different diagnoses;; & btw, if it IS arthritic, a heating pad is the LAST thing you want to be putting on it;; & that's why this guy has been suffering for 24 yrs with it, only makes it worse....cold pack is the best, but find out what is causing it by a doc, noone here can help cuz there are too many issues involved with the knee & esp @ your age...
