What will i be prescribed...? (Pain management for knee)?About 5 years ago, I had surgery on my right knee to nail a piece of bone back in place that had broken off and was floating around my knee.
After the surgery, i was prescribed Vicodin 500s.
Within the 5 years after the surgery, I have been prescribed Vicodin 500s, then 1000s many times for multiple dental procedures (multiple root canals, wisdom teeth pulled individually...).
Having been prescribed Vicodin so many times, I have built up a tolerance in which it won't work for me anymore..
Anyway, my knee has been acting up lately--
I've been getting sharp shooting pains nearly everyday, I work in an office and it hurts when I sit for prolonged amounts of time, everyday I also get this dull throbbing pain where it feels like the blood is having a hard time circulating (only way I can describe it), and also, my knee has a tendency to go numb in association with the dull pain.
I was wondering what my doctor would suggest prescribing me, after I tell him of my tolerance to Vicodin.
Thank Youu :)
@Creed: My attempt to eliminate the pain was by having surgery done, lol. I did not participate in the Physical Therapy that was recommended after surgery, however, as it was pretty expensive.
Now, I am not eligible for health insurance coverage with my job until January, and anything other than being prescribed something (until then) would be pretty costly I imagine =/

there are many more meds out there than vicodin; just tell him of your exposure already;; but what concerns me is why aren't you looking for other alternatives to fixing your knee?? meds only mask the pain;; so, evidentaly I can assume you don't want to relieve it...no?? try asking about what you can do to eliminate the pain & the problem...surgery is not always the fix..& meds only help to relieve the pain, not get rid of the problem, but possibly even induce another...good luck, but I would be looking for the cure...
again, there are many other meds you can be prescribed, just tell him about your vicodin use & ask him for something different;; the nasty thing about this whole situation, is that 5 yrs IS too late to get any other relief, other than surgery or possibly steroids....but another nasty part is that because you didn't have the mooney or time for PT back then, it's gonna cost you the rest of your life...I cannot express to you the importance of PT after ortho surgery...but, I suppose you know this already...good luck, but anything else.. darvocet, percocet, hydrocodone, oxycontin, etc, etc, there are quite a few, besides pain patches too...he'll head you in the right direction...again, good luck...

You may have reinjured your knee. When I was researching my knee injury, I ran across one that had a description like you are writing about; pain while sitting. You can go to the doctor but I doubt they will give you a narcotic. Doctors are very stingy about that because the DEA has been cracking down to make sure these scripts are for real injuries. And while you had a real injury, the doctor is going to recommend tests to see if you reinjured yourself. Then they are going to suggest PT or any non pain medication regimen. I have had pain under my left rib for 2 years and no doctor would prescribe Vicodin, etc. I got Tramadol which actually does work for me and doesn't make me feel loopy.
