Knee surgery?

Knee surgery?Has anbody's dog had knee surgery that could tell me about how they are now and all. My Great Dane had knee surgery about 5 months ago. He pulled one of the internal stitches, so he had to go back & get it replaced (that was about 1 1/2 months ago). But stil today, he doesn't stand on that leg 100% when he is standing still. He kinda pushes it straight back to not put a whole ton of pressure on it. Yet, he still walks on it just fine. The muscle in the leg is now just coming back in, before he had just a hip bone sticking out. His leg is still wobbly. Other then that, he is the happiest dog in the world. He can be quite the baby, whines about everything, but not this. He is on rimadyl. I'm interested to hear opinions from people who have had dogs with knee surgery's. Please do not respond saying take him to the vet. I only want to hear from peple that have delt with knee surgery on their dogs. thanks
It was a torn ligament, cruciate
Sadiejan.... I'm using up the rest of the rimadyl. I won't keep in my house anymore because my rat terrier got into it and ate 300mg. So 3 tabs. 10x the ammount a 16LB dog should eat. She almost died.

please google "the danger of rimadyl" & how dangerous it is.

If it were my dog, he'd be on http://www.biosynergy.com/GCMSM.htm available at WM or any drug store

my dog didn't need the surgery because I cured his with the combo. He is a small dog & it took 5 months but he runs with no sign of any problem

Which knee surgery did he have? Cruciate repair, luxated patella.. etc?

Btw for most knee injuries, it is a total myth that it can be 'cured' with medications. Small dogs will often find ways to get around the pain because they are small. Large dogs do not have that luxury.

For a cruciate repair, it is absolutely VITAL that you force your dog to rest. Leash only for going outside to potty, and enforced cage rest the rest of the time. The fact that he ruptured a suture means that he was allowed to become too active. Cruciate repairs can take up to 6 months to fully heal, you MUST let the cruciate ligament regrow to its full strength before allowing the dog to put weight on it. Messing up this sugery can sometimes be repaired, but it's expensive and harmful to the knee joint because more surgeries causes more scar tissue. I suggest buckling down, and no matter how sad it is that your dog isn't allowed to get up and play, it's really the best for him.

Rimadyl is an ok drug for short term treatments, long term treatment eventually causes liver damage. If you want to help relieve the pain, cold-pack the knee to take some of the inflammation down naturally.

It depends on what type of surgery your dog had--there are different ways to repair a cruciate ligament injury. My dog had the TPLO procedure, where they remove the ligament, cut the bone, and reposition it and stabilize it with plates and screws. Her surgery was in September of 2006, and she still has not fully recovered. We kept her inside until February, walked on a leash only, and did everything the vet told us to do. She runs and plays now with my other dogs, is not on any medications, is not in any pain, but favors that leg, limps occasionally, and I can tell it is still weak. She also turns it out rather than holding it straight most of the time, "bunny hops" with her back legs when she runs, and if she stands for a long period of time, the leg gets shaky. I have not had any other experience with dogs, but I do know it takes a very long time for people to recover from knee surgery, and since my dog is apparently in no pain, I've just tried to be patient. I would like to hear from any vets that might be able to weigh in on this one.

Newport Hills Animal Hospital is very good with legs. Since you're in Washington give them a visit if you can.
