Cycling.
Just kidding, sort of.
Best remedies are to avoid in the first place. You should have shoes no older than 6 months. Run on a cushioned track if possible. I run a red clay track and it's great on my joints. Mulch or even grass works well too.
When your knees get get sore the first you thing should do is use cold or ice packs to reduce swelling. Warming up properly is important as well as stretching right after the run.
Also try to make sure you're not overextending your knees and try to land mid-foot rather than on your heels. This will absorb a lot of the force that gets transmitted up in to you knees and hips.
If none of this works, buy a bike.

8 out of 10 runners will have running related injuries. Rest until you fully recover before running again. If you don't get better after 1-2 weeks, see a podiatrist.
Suggestion
1. Warm up and stretch before running. (20-30min)
2. Try barefoot running. You will be pleasantly surprised.
3. Start slow. Build up speed and distance slowly.

I had knee pain when I started running about 12 weeks ago into my 2nd week. It was painful! It scared me that maybe my legs weren't meant to be for running but I was wrong. It was the shoes I wore so I bought Asics. When my knees did hurt at the time, I had a hot bath with epsom salts & wrapped my knee in an elastene bandage with some ice rub, my husband would massage me too so that works! Just don't sleep overnite with an elastene bandage on your knee tho!
