I recently tore my cartilage. In the knee, it depends on where you tore the cartilage to determine your recovery time. If you tear the inside of the meniscus (Cartilage) where the blood supply can not reach, it may have to be left torn. However, if you tear it around the outside it can be fixed. Some instances, the cartilage can be healed on it's own with help to physical theropy. This is very rare. I however, am a major athlete and got surgery. Your friend will not be able to return to the soccer season if he chooses to have surgery. Also, he could have torn the ACL along with it, which would take about 6 months of recovery. But alone, the surgery itself takes about 6 weeks to heal after the surgery in order to go back to physical sports. I'm sorry but if he does not have surgery it is VERY unlikely he will ever be able to play high level sports again. The meniscus needs a lot of force to tear it at such a young age, therefore, it will tear more if you keep playing on it. THe meniscus is the shock absorber for the knee, and if he leaves it torn he would have a REALLY high chance or getting orthritis. That's knee pain from the joints. I really hope he feels better and im sorry about him losing the soccer season. I'm a freshman in Highschool and i tore meniscus in my knee October 9th and haven't been back to volleyball since. I got surgery November 5th and im being cleared for physical activity in 2 days and is doing travel on the 3rd of january. If he works hard in physical theropy after the surgery his knee might heal faster, mine did! Tell your friend good Luck!
