What should help, for an elder who has knee pain?

What should help, for an elder who has knee pain? This is for serious replies only.
My mother is currently 67, and has horrible knee pain. It's in both knees. She never injured her knee, and she obviously can't run in her elderly state.

Is there any suggestions as to what my mother can do for help?
Thank you in advance.

She should see a doctor if possible. She most likely has arthritus, and deterioration of the knee joint. Over the counter medications like Aleve may help and a daily supplement of Osteo-BiFex would also be beneficial for the deterioration problem.

Get her an anti-inflammatory rub for her knees. Apply accordingly (8 hourly usually). You could go down the line of knee supports but then there is the possibility of clots in the elderly. Even anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen will help if she does not have asthma or stomagh ulcers.

- smartypants
motrin & muscle rub
alternate ice & heat
massage
sit/stay in bed

Some knee pains are caused by the tendon for the kneecap shortening up which pulls the kneecap up on and into the knee making it hard and painful to move that leg. Once those muscles are released the pain should be gone. Here is how to release those muscles:
Kneecaps:
Do while sitting on a chair with no front cross braces.
While sitting have your leg resting in a stretched mode. Place both your thumbs, side by side, about 2 inches behind the kneecap and press down into your leg and then redirect the pressure a little towards the kneecap. After 30 seconds, slowly slide your foot back and under your chair as far as it will go, release the pressure but hold your foot there for another 30 seconds.
the important part to make this work is the pressure on the muscle. If you don't have enough on it this won't work. If you do have that trouble give it another try right away.
