How can I prevent knee injuries while skiing?I am a teenage girl who lifts weights a few times a week and has no history of knee injuries. I've heard of braces that are supposed to help prevent knee injuries, but there is a lot of controversy as to if they actually work...I appreciate your suggestions!

I wear a Bregg acl brace custom made for my right knee. I have only skied once without it and will never do it again. The brace gives me stability and protection.I suggest if your going to ski with a brace, spend the money on one, not a cheap walmart brace. I fit it over my base layer and underneath my ski pants.
Thats the brace i have.

If you have no history of knee injuries and don't suffer from any weak jonts then although the IDEA of getting hurt makes you cringe- you're fine! If you wear a brace then it won't help you and it will be more of an impairment to your skiing as movement will be restricted.
Just dont worry about falling and hurting yourself- stay fit and get to be a really awsomely amazing good skier and you wont even fall :P simples ;)

make sure your bindings are set to release pretty easily. I saw a kid last year that fell not even going that fast and because her skis didn't snap off both legs tried to go in different directions and she ended up tearing ligaments in her leg

Most of the knee injuries are related to letting your hips drift back to the tail of your ski. This can be as little as an inch that then puts your knee in a vulnerable position for ligament tears. Since you have a reasonable amount of leg strength you should be able to ski with just your own muscles unless you have had joint injuries that weakened them. In general any brace will prevent the muscles and joints from developing the proper amount of strength and reactions to avoid injury. Set some limits on yourself and stay in control. Balance your weight on the full foot and maintain shin cuff contact mat all times. Take some lessons to improve your skills.

I'd agree with the person who said to make sure your bindings are set properly. Have them checked at least once a year to make sure they release properly. I wouldn't wear a brace unless a doctor says you need to. If you have no previous injury, I wouldn't see why a doctor would tell you to wear one anyway. Modern bindings are designed to release to avoid injury.
