I'm sorry but you have to be more specific. Where exactly on your knee does it hurt? does it hurt when you run? jump?kick? switch direction?

Don't forget to ice your knees for 15-15 minutes or until you feel pain from the cold or nothing at all. Ice 3-5 times a day with 2 hours in between for the first 72 hours after the injury. Also you may take ibuprofen as an anti-inflammatory (reduces swelling).

you may not be fit enough for the sport yet

You may have hyper extended your knees playing sports - You might want to go to your Dr. and let them check it out - and make sure you haven't done serious damage.

I always answer people's knee questions on here. I just had my 13th knee surgery two weeks ago so I have a little experience. I recommend that you go to an orthopedist. It is a doctor that specializes in bones, joints, etc.. He/she will examine your knee, talk to you about your symptoms and take xrays and most likely an mri. Xrays generally don't show a lot of information on the knees. The knee has 4 ligaments and lots of cartilage that can cause problems and these can't be seen too clearly on xrays. An MRI is your best bet to find out waht is wrong. I wouldn't wait to see a doctor if I were you. If it is a cartilage problem or something like that it will just get worse with time, so better to get it figured out now. So find a doctor and get an appointment. In the meantime when your knee is swollen elevate it above heart level and apply ice for 20 minutes or so a bunch of times during the day and take tylenol if you have pain. I hope you figure it out soon and it is nothing serious. Good luck.

There are many causes for injuries to the knee. If the knee swells only after playing sports then it is possible that it could be an issue with the tendon. A common injury that affects knees is something called "Jumper's Knee". It basically is micro-tares in the tendon on the top of your knee at the base of your knee cap. You don't have to jump to get it. It is very manageable, but unfortunately there is no cure short of some iffy surgery. I would suggest and orthopedic surgeon. Only they can diagnose the difference between this injury and something more serious like ligament damage or a hyper extension.
