What is the cause and cure of knee and leg pain???

- tiaforsythe
I'm not sure what leg pain you are talking about. But belive it or not putting a bar of soap under your sheets will stop leg cramps in the night. I know it sounds weird..but my grandmother told me to do it and it worked. I know several people that it's worked for...people may think your crazy to do...but don't argue with results!

- Wren
Poor blood flow through the legs is one cause of leg pains.
The best cure I know is to eat banannas, it helps with leg cramps.

Serious help needed for my knee pain (joint pain)?

knee pain joint
by Mundoo

Serious help needed for my knee pain (joint pain)?Yeah,

I heard, 1. when you have knee joint pain, you are not allowed to have acidic stuff like lemon, orange etc? is this true??

2. Secondly, coz im a soccerplayer, before playing soccer, should i WARM UP first? maybe i thought if i warm up first, then then will prepare my knees therefore not as much pain? coz quite often i play without warming up, and my fitness is not the problem, its my knees, so maybe i have to warm up first?

3. Any foods/nutrition to take/avoid for my knee?

Thanks thanks

- wisebeyond
Try taking a glucosamine sulphate formula. I know lots of people that have improved joint function after taking this supplement. It will take a few weeks to see improvement. Eat non-acidic fresh fruit. Eat fresh pineapple which contains bromelain, an enzyme which will help to reduce inflammation. You can get bromelain in pill form also. Hope this helps.

How to alleviate my knee pain?

How to alleviate my knee pain?15/F I play tennis and it causes knee pain. What can I take to strengthen my knee joint so it won't hurt as much? Or what can I take to alleviate the pain? Thanks!

- dmn17
wear a knee brace...it shoudl help a lot...or some sort of knee sleeve.
also ice it every night and massage it. don't keep your knees bent for a long time while sitting on the couch or sleeping...it cramps it up.

- ItsMe
I would suggest a visit to an Orthopedic Surgeon or Sport Medicine MD as they can either fit you with a brace that you can wear to take the pressure off and reduce the knee pain or they can send you for Physical Therapy (PT) to teach you different exercises and ways to prevent stress and injury to your knee(s).

I hope this helps! Good luck to you!!

I use these pain patches. They are cold and smell like noxema but work well. I have a severe knee injury and don't like to take pills.

- rosern37
1. glucosamine chondroitin to strengthen joints
2. tylenol or ibuprofen for pain
3. leg exercises to strengthen muscles around knees so that your knees have more support and less stress and, therefore, less risk of injury and pain

OPERATION!!!!

- Rochelle
I used to get that all the time. If you could wrap it in an Ace bandage or slip on one of the ace knee brace type elastic bandages. Also, take some Advil or Motrin to reduce the swelling. May be too late to ice it, but it's worth a try. Good luck. Oh, and gentle stretches to see if ti will pop/adjust. Worked on me.

LISTEN TO ME. Please. I am only adamant about this because I'm 39 years old and have suffered pain for several of my adult life (different from yours, but listen).

Do your research on MSM. It's a supplement. The long name is methylsulfonylmethane. I found amazing things about it. I get it at Whole Foods in NJ, but you can find it at any vitamin or health foods store. You can't overdose on it as you literally "pee it out" in 12 hours, it's just a form of sulfur.

What I found is that it aids in pain relief immensely, helps patients heal quicker after surgery, and get this - side effects are healthier hair and nails. I got out the hospital March 25th after MAJOR surgery and until this day, I haven't so much as taken a Tylenol for pain. NOTHING. I hadn't even noticed until a few weeks ago (since I was on disability and sitting in front of my pc most of the day) that even my beginning signs of carpal tunnel have completely ceased.

I take 3000 mg a day. MSM was used for people with tennis elbow, knee problems, etc. I have found the pain relief phenomenal.

Please, do your research and look into it.

what is the best treatment for osteoarthritis knee problem?

what is the best treatment for osteoarthritis knee problem?my mom has developed knee problem from osteoarthritis. She is 55 years old. due to the problem, she couldn't do the gardening she likes doing.
i have heard about knee replacement, but i'm wondering if there is any other solution. i'd highly appreciate any answer to my question.
thanks

First your mom needs something to control the pain and slow the damage to the knees. Pain killers on long term have side effects. I recommend, Arthrid, a natural pain reliever. Go to www.sindor.com for more info. good luck.

- c504play
not if her knees are that bad and she is now bone on bone. i am 55 with the same thing i waited until i could no longer stand the pain and have surgery scheduled 1/25/07. dont let her wait too long the longer you wait the damage is done

- Sawyer
A friend of mine was scheduled for knee replacement surgery. however, I told him about a nutritional supplement. After 3 months on it; he was totally pain-free. It's been over a year now & he makes no mention of knee replacement surgery.
Look into...

I would recommend Homeopathy Treatment for your mother.

For right knee, take Arnica 200 - 3 doses 1 day then Bryonia 30 - Daily 2 doses.

For left knee, take Rhus Tox 200 one day 3 doses then, Bryonia 30 - Daily 2 Doses.

For both the knees - Bryonia 30 - Daily Twice and Aurum Met 1M - intercurrently.

Consult a Doctor/Registered Physician before use. I strongly recommend that dont take it without consulting a doctor.

For Heaven sake dont opt for surgical treatment.

Give Medicines to your mother with Strong Belief.

Wish your mother a Speedy Recovery.

God Bless.

- mr.answerman
Once a joint has osteoarthritis nothing can be done to that joint to so called "cure it". Of course she can do the pain reliever thing and that may offer some relief. There is another treatment called Synvisc (sp) this is an injection into the knee of a viscous fluid that will offer a long term pain relief. It lasts for months, but it must be injected by a doctor. One more thing to consider is a half knee replacement, this is a shorter recovery time if your mom is a candidate. Your mom is young so she should have a very good outcome if she decides to do any surgical route.

sometimes the cartilage in the knees will wear down causing the bones to make contact.. time to see a doc!
if this is the case then surgery is usually done

My legs aresoar and I twisted my knee. Should I still go to football today?I went to play football the last 5 days, and first we run for 30 minutes, then we shoot on goal and later i am a goalkeeper. My legs are soar and twisted my knee yesterday, buy I can still kick OK. Should I go to football today again or take a day off?

- Bella
you might want to take a few days off. a twisted knee needs to heal before its strong again. your patellar tendon is really weak, as well as a few other ligaments and tendons, you need to ice it and really take care of that knee.

well if u can still kick ok..then y not? :P but if i were a doctor i would say take a break

What is the internal moment arm of the hamstring muscle at the knee if...?

What is the internal moment arm of the hamstring muscle at the knee if...?What is the internal moment arm of the hamstring muscle at the knee if...the muscles attach 5.0 cm distal to the knee joint. Assume the knee is in a position of full extension and the line of pull of the hamstrings is at 15 degrees to the tibia.

Any help would be much appreciated!!! Thanks :)

- Technobuff
A bit medical for me, but...
If the pull is at 15 deg. to the tibia, the moment arm with the knee at full extension would be (tan 15deg. x 5cm) = (.2679 x 5cm) = 1.34cm.

Does anybody know of any home made remedy for knee joint pains?

Does anybody know of any home made remedy for knee joint pains?I have trouble with my left knee when going down the steps and when it gets a little colder. Sometimes it wants to fold from under me due to the stress of pain. I cannot tolerate pain killers because it upsets my stomach. Is there another remedy out there for these?

- Tilks Mom
I use Ben Gay or Vicks, rub the knee then wet and wring out a towel put it in your micro wave for like 2 minutes have a dry towel waiting(it will be hot so handle carefully) to put it on cover with the dry towel and wrap it around your knee helps for shoulders and neck also.Wet heat seems to get deeper into the joint and relieve the pain longer.

- Moped Mama
see a dr r/o artheritis, RA or osteo? take VIT D at walmart 2000 IU , walmart sells JOINT relief but make sure its not LYME diease attacking you?

- littlegirllost33
My mom used to have bad knee pain and she found it very helpful to swim and soak in a hot tub.

the water allows you to move in it ways that not being in water inhibits you from doing. these movements and simple stretches can really make it feel better.

- Si'gwetsi'
some people use heat some use cold pads but nothing works for me . good luck

You sound like you might have a combination of a torn meniscus and arthritis , you need to see an Orthopedic because over time you may get worse. In the meantime you need to stay off it and let it rest. I hope you feel better.

Runners, outside of knee pain? Need treatment HELP! PLEASE!!?

Runners, outside of knee pain? Need treatment HELP! PLEASE!!?Thank you for taking the time to give me advice. I recently purchased a treadmill and went on it for an hour each day for 5 days. I mostly jogged at 5-7 mph and did little walking just 5 minutes at the end/begging and for a few rests in the work-out. I hadnt excercised that much for about 2 months and My knee was really starting to hurt but once I started running it was ok. But whenever I would get off the treadmill it would be very still and VERY painful, to the point of not walking. I havent gone on it since and it has been about 3-4 weeks and now whenever I jog at all it hurts enought to not be able to jog. I read online about ITBS if you know what that is but I am not sure thats the case. It feels like twisted/strained tendon on the outside of knee cap. Have you ever had this and how can I heal it soon? I have soccer in just three days and I really need to work-out. I have gained 25 pounds and need to lose it. Advice on healing knee and how to burn calories/build leg muscle with injured knee. Thanks you soo much.

- Willow
it sounds like it's strained, but you should probably go to the doctor's to check it out... also, if you just bend it back and forth for a while does it hurt? that's a pretty good way to exercise the injury, and to build muscle. um... if it's that bad, you probably won't be able to play soccer in just three days. stay off of it as much as possible, and try to ice it. if you need to, a brace might be a good idea. :)

hope it helps! good luck!

Knee Problems???..............?

Knee Problems???..............?I usually like to crack my knees because it makes them feel as if they are awake. But about 3 months ago, my left knee started to hurt. Some days the pain would hurt just below my knee and other days the pain would hurt behind the knee. And the worst part about it is that I'm in dance so we do a lot of squatting and stuff which is when my knee actually has its problems. Now its like 3 days ago my right knee starting hurting too. What is wrong with knees!!! Are my knees already starting to fail me?

- AJ
If you've been dancing for a long time, it could simply be an overuse injury. However, there are a LOT of tendons, ligaments, and other parts of the knee that can be fairly easily injured, so it's best that you get checked out by a doctor. (Usually see your regular doctor, who may refer you to an orthopedist.) I know not knowing what's wrong can be scary, but the sooner you get it checked out the sooner you can find out what to do to fix it! Waiting on something like this is never a good idea.

I've had knee problems for the past 9 months or so. Anyone have a similar story with a good ending?

I've had knee problems for the past 9 months or so. Anyone have a similar story with a good ending?Starting last November, my knee got really swollen. It was to the point where I couldn't bend it and the pressure of the fluid caused great pain. I've had x-rays, an MRI, and blood tests done that haven't pinpointed the exact cause. I've been seeing a rheumatologist because the doctors suspect I might have rheumatoid arthritis. The medication they gave me worked for a month or two, but my swollen knee is back. I've begun to wonder if the doctors really know what's wrong. I used Webmd and researched pseudogout and gout, which also match my symptoms. Anyone have any idea at all?

- preppychick14
my friend had the same problem and he died.....sorry........just kidding

I had the same thing for a year and a half. I had to switch to another orthopedic surgeon who gave me a steroid shot, and started on physical therapy. My knee got worse, so he went in and did arthroscopic knee surgery. They found A LOT of scar tissue, which most of the time it doesn't show up on MRI's and x-rays. I suggest you go see another doctor.

How to get rid off my pain & swelling on my knee ?

How to get rid off my pain & swelling on my knee ?I had hurt just above my right knee nearly a one & half months ago. The pain was reducing slowly. Suddenly a swelling formed upon my knee 15 to 20 days back. I showed the doctors. One said that it is Bursitis with some fluid in it while another sail it is Osteo- Arthiritis. They all suggested only pain killers. I took lots pf pain-killers but all went in vain. I still apply the Volini, Iodex locally. The main problem now is that I feel pain while folding my right leg, cannot sit on with folded knees and also feel pain while climbing up or down the stairs. I want suggestions from u all how to get rid off this problem. Will that fluid go away ? I am 56 years old.

- Giddyup
You didnt mention having had any ex-rays of the knee... It's not good to have swelling (and pain) for such a long time.
Go to an Orthopedist (bone Dr). They'll at least ex-ray and find out for sure what is causing the symptoms and what your options are from there...

- Julie B
Chronic knee pain sufferer writing. Sorry to hear about ur dilema. Did the Physician bother or suggest DRAINING the fluid off of this offensive knee? This needs to happen. Sounds like you need to see an Orthopedic Physician if you are not satisfied with the advice you are getting. Try the following in the meantime: Get a knee brace, one that has a hole where the knee cap is located. Make sure there are slits on either side of the knee cap. This will help. Also, REST the knee, Elevate the knee, and ICE the knee. A bag of veggies will make a great ice bag if you haven't got an ice bag on hand. In addition, a good anti-inflammatory like Ibuprophen, up to 800 mg every 6 hours will help. I hope this advice has helped. I go to a pain management clinic, where I get injections in my knee 4 times yearly. If you haven't had x-rays, MRIs, or CT Scans done, I would INSIST on this. Take care and good luck!

- jan c
Try to stay off the sore knee & elevate as much as possible. Try alternating moist warm heat & ice packs. See ANOTHER doctor.
I have Rheumatoid arthritis & unfortunately there's only so much one can do to alleviate chronic pain. Sometimes we have to learn to live with it.

- ben
visit a sports therapist.
they specialise in joint injuries in relation to muscular disorders.
likely they will massage the area to drain fluids from the area and also do some pressure point massage to relax muscles and fachia and tendons. these muscles may just be trapping or constricting nerves. when the muscle relaxes the nerves should fire up and start to work correctly transmitting message more efficiently to and from the brain sensory motor centre.

do not go to a general massage therapist who is not skilled in refex and joint rotation. they may add to your problem.

Is diabetes in a dog less than a year old common? My puppy, Ginger, is a 10 month-old pomeranian/papillon mix. She's adorable with the best personality ever, and often acts perfectly normal and perky, even when she is very ill (she had Kennel Cough, worms, and Giardia when I first rescued her).

We've been out of the woods with those illnesses for a while, but over the past five-ish months, she has been bad about having accidents (mostly urine, though poop every so often) inside. She usually paws at me when she needs to go out, and I must take her pretty much immediately. I did Petsmart training with her (until I fractured my knee) and we worked a lot on potty training, and she was given a small treat every time she went outside, as well as tons of praise and love.

But she still has accidents inside.

I had her urine tested twice towards the beginning of all of this, to see if this was medical rather than behavioral, and both times, the 2 different vets said everything came out perfectly normal.

However, the accidents have continued. She is also ALWAYS, every single day, SO thirsty. She would drink 10 gallons of water if I let her. She'll chug so much water at once, and then need to go outside every 20 minutes, especially after meals (which hasn't been too easy with my knee, living on a 2nd floor apartment).

I had knee surgery a little over 2 weeks ago, and did not have family member or friend who was able to take care of her. I boarded her at a nice doggy daycare, where she has been working with a trainer (as she is incredibly mischievous) . The trainer called me yesterday to tell me she had been noticing that Ginger has to urinate before and after each 30 minute lesson, and she was concerned.

I haven't seen any personality changes, and she's perky and very sweet, but I'm incredibly worried. I pick her up in 5 days and am scheduling an appointment with the vet to have her tested for diabetes when I pick her up. I'm just confused, because I've done research, and canine diabetes seemingly strikes older dogs who are overweight. She is neither older, nor overweight. Just always has too urinate and is frequently thirsty. Are there any other diseases or conditions she may possibly have?

Thanks for reading! Sorry for the lengthy background detail for this question.

- Dale A
What you're thinking of mostly is "diabetes mellitus" or 'sugar diabetes', which is a malfunction of the insulin/glucagon system. There is also "diabetes insipidus" which is a malfunction of the ability of the body to concentrate urine (specifically ADH either isn't secreted, or doesn't get recognized where it needs to be).

If you're searching around on the internet, the medical term you're looking for is PU/PD. Polyuria/Polydipsia. There are a lot of things that can cause it, and you'll need to do bloodwork to rule a lot of them out (particularly checking kidney function).

Number one on my list would be psychogenic polydipsia though. Basically she drinks a lot because its a habit, which means she has to pee a lot. You don't want to restrict her water though without knowing with a fair degree of certainty that there aren't problems elsewhere.

back of knee pain, calf pain, and birth control pills?

back of knee pain, calf pain, and birth control pills?Today while shopping I started to feel pain in the back of my left knee and my upper calf towards my knee (but not my entire calf). I've been taking birth control pills since November due to heavy periods and anemia (also taking iron supplements for anemia) and I am wondering if this could possibly be a blood clot related to taking birth control. The pain I feel is not intense, it's very dull and just kind of "there;" when I move my leg (flex, walk, etc) the pain does not worsen. Also for the past week, I have also been very tired lately even though I've been getting 8 + hours of sleep AND taking 2 + hour naps during the day. If it helps, I am 20 years old, do not smoke or drink...should I be concerned, or wait till I graduate nursing school before I continue to self- diagnose? Thanks!

- Meg
Yeah I'd go see a doctor especially since birth control pills are known to cause blood clots and if it is a clot you don't want it to become dislodged, better to be safe than sorry and take precaution the doctors aren't going to get mad at you lol good luck

- Miranda
It could be related to your pills, but I wouldn't jump to the conclusion of clot right away. If you're super concerned about clotting, you could try taking baby aspirin, 2 pills a day to prevent further clotting. Since it only just started today, I might do that and then wait to see if it does continue. As for the amount of sleep you are getting, I'm thinking that maybe the stress of school is having an effect on you and if this keeps going on, both the pain and the hypersomnia, I would ask your doctor if you could try a different pill. I also am in a medical field, am taking birth control for heavy periods and anemia and I'm 21, so I know exactly what you're talking about. The only difference is that I've been on birth control since I was 13 because I started having problems when I was twelve. I won't go into detail, but basically I tried three different birth control pills and two types of pain killers before I settled on Depo Provera, which I have now been on for two years. Each pill I tried, I took for 2-3 months for them to fully settle and take effect. Just keep talking to your doctor about how your treatment is working for you. Obviously you know it all has to do with hormones and although we call it "the pill" there are many different drugs and each drug is different for everyone. Good luck!

Why do I experience knee and ankle joint pain after walking for a long period of time?

Why do I experience knee and ankle joint pain after walking for a long period of time?Hi, I'm 18 years old, but ever since little I experience knee and ankle pain after walking/standing for too long (i.e shopping for a day). It feels like my leg is being pulled apart right at the joints. After awhile my entire leg is numb and in pain, and of course most painful at the joints. This would last the entire night, but next morning I would wake up fine. Does anyone has an explanation for this?
Thank You

- Sela
It's probably your spine. I don't know if you believe in chiropractors, but they've helped me. Or see your PCP and he will most likely send you to an orthopedic specialist. Good luck and lay off the walking and don't sleep on that side. Ice, and tylenol.

- Janelle
Hi, I am a physical therapist. I would agree that this sounds like a potential spine related issue. Symptoms of numbness are generally related to the nerves. Although issues such as flat feet can create increased stress on the legs, symptoms of numbness are not very common. In positions of extended standing, the nerves of the spine can become compressed causing leg pain and numbness. Nerve related really should be evaluated by a physician, specifically an orthopedic doctor.

Likelihood of leg length difference. See a foot doc, get measured. May need a simple shoe lift inside one shoe for correction. Expect abot 4-8 weeks recovery.

What can I expect after a second knee surgery?

What can I expect after a second knee surgery?I'm a 19 year old female. I'm going in for a second knee surgery in less then a year. The knee surgery that my doctor wants to do this time is a ligament graft on my left knee. What can I expect with this surgery then the first knee surgery I had. The first knee surgery was a Lateral Release. Please help, I'm very nervous to have this next surgery.

- CrazyHorseLady
I know just how you feel this year alone I had 3 knee surgeries (I have had 10 overall) You can pretty much expect the same thing that you had with your first surgery. I have never had the surgery done that you are looking to get done (I have had 4 freaking lateral releases) I just hope that this surgery helps you more than the first one.

Hi,I did the following:

Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

My ACL and MCL were torn by a goalkeeper taking me out in soccer. This is the resulting surgery, which actually turned out to be just a scope of my knee, seeing that it started healing on it's own.

Knee Disorders: Is it bad to exercise with knee pain?

Is it bad to exercise with knee pain? For a couple of years I have had knee pain on and off, especially after bending my knees and then standing up. I think it may be chondromalacia patella or patellofemoral pain Syndrome. In the past year I have taken up running, and try to run about two miles 3 or 4 times per week. My neighborhood is relatively hilly, and after running I often have mild pain in my knees. It is better than it used to be, but should I get it checked out by a doctor? Is the running helping or hurting? 10 pts. best answer.

- Marky p
running doesn't help because your knees take alot of pressure from your bodyweight when running, and if your running trainers are getting old then it might be worth buying a new pair, because that could also be the reason why your getting knee trouble, but it is probably best to go check with a doctor and see if they can refer you to a physiotherapist.

good luck

Please help with Knee Pain Diagnosis?

Please help with Knee Pain Diagnosis?Hi,

A few weeks ago I started feeling this intense pain in my right knee that has just grown increasingly worse. Yes, I know I should see a doctor and I will, but for now I just want some opinions. I need to get this fixed especially because it is my right knee and that's crucial for driving.

The pain only seems to occur when I am sitting, and I can only describe it as I feel that I need to crack my knee to fully extend it, but when I try to crack it, the pain is so intense that I either give up or crack it and feel awful. It is even painful when I cross my left leg over my right knee. The strange thing is that I am completely pain free when walking. The only problem seems to be walking up stairs (and sometimes down).

A little background- I am a 23 year old female. I just started a new office job a few months ago where I am sitting for 7+ hrs a day.

Please help! Thank you :)

can't diagnose you for the simple fact that there could be a million & one reasons for pain in the knee;; what I can try to do is relieve you of some pain until you do go to see the doc;; get a flexible gel cold pack from the drugstore (the cheapest one you can find, about $ 5)..towel wrapped & over the part of the knee that opens (do this while leg is propped)..15-20 mins when agitated (not pain, but physical agitation to the knee);; when you are sitting, try to 'walk' your feet out instead of attempting to lift that foot..the thigh support will leave the hip flexor out & will reduce the amount of tension to the knee..once it's walked out with complete thigh support, then you can lift your foot..also try pulling the foot away from you (like you would do to stretch in the morning);; also, SLIGHTLY angling your hip in or out will allow the alignment change to your knee..every cm that you move that leg L or R allows the bones to play differently..you'll find which way & distance actually reduces your pain..remember this 'angle' when you climb & descend steps (actually descending is worse on the knees...so if you can avoid it altogether, try)...you can also try going backward on the steps..many people find relief this way when they HAVE to do steps;; another thing is the old "up with the good, down with the bad" which again reduces pressure to the knee..it would rather behave like a support mechanism than a worker...so, ya have to go it one step @ a time...good luck, until you find the cause...know it's a lot of info, but if you can get these down, you WILL find some relief...

SWOLLEN knee?

SWOLLEN knee?My knee is scaring me it has been swollen for a few days, but its gets more swollen after stepping down stairs, and INCREDIBLY swollen when it hits water shower, swimming and bath. What could it be.
I'm 22 5'6 180lbs, i didn't injur it i just noticed that it hurts goin up and down stairs on just the one knee and whenever it get in water it blows up.

- leah1597
Did you hit it? If not than I have NO idea. Sorry, i'm only 11.

- js
Well, you have not described your age in the query, you should when you ask something regarding health because pains differ as per the age. BTW what you say seems to have caused by some injury, sprain, or strain. you can apply any pain relief balm, massage it with the balm or try Narayan Taila, the pain releifing ayurvedic oil and then let a half of bucket hot water (not Very Hot ok) flow over your knee. if you are above 50yrs then do not use water, just apply the balm and do try some anti-inflammatory medicine too that may help you for sure. Also avoid swimming and bathing with cold water for a week. Goodluck!

Physical therapists, will pt cure neck, back and knee trouble or just make it better?

Physical therapists, will pt cure neck, back and knee trouble or just make it better?I have a curve in my spine. If I do physical therapy for all three of them will I be able to get a job that would require bending my neck down or up for a long time?

How much weight can I lift regularly? How much weight can I push and pull regularly? If it cures my problems will I still need to do physical therapy forever if I get a job that requires bending of my neck like that, lifting, and pushing and pulling objects regularly?

- mistify
Part of PT is to teach you how to perform your job related tasks with good body mechanics.

Without knowing the specifics behind your issues, I cannot say for sure whether you will be able to do the job you wish, but I can tell you that a "curve" in your spine does not make it any more likely that you will have back pain than the general population.

Sorry I cannot be more specific.

- grandmakitty5
You need to have a good Doctor to help you plan your care,a Specialist would be best-a orthopedic. Therapy has to be ordered. Each case would be different and special. No one can answer these questions without a better diagnosis.

- Victor
Physical therapists will provide guidance and its your effort to do the exercise regularly makes it better.

Good luck

knee pain? injury? what is this?

knee pain? injury? what is this?yesterday i was sitting on one leg when i went to stand up all i felt was this shooting pain in my knee and then afterwards a pop. it seems to be fine when i walk on it but when i try to bend it pain is pretty bad. i don't think it has to do with a muscle because i have torn muscle before, very painful, but nothing like this. what is it

- immattj1
Hard to diagnose from the computer desk.
The knee is not nearly a complex joint as the shoulder, but still there are ligaments & tendons that are constantly in use whenever you stand/walk/run/whatever. Hope for possibly only a microtear that will heal with time/ice/rest.

If not, think about visiting a professional.
Good luck

- silky1
Well this sounds like it may be the onset of arthritis. It's best to have the knee x rayed, however x rays don't always show arthritis you may need the sedimation rate test to determine if it's arthritis or not.

I dislocated knee 2 days ago and it was pushed back in but my leg is swollen; how long will it be swollen for?Dislocated my right knee but my leg is still swollen and nurse told me not to bend it for about 5 days. How long should i expect it to be swollen and when should i be able to walk on it freely?

- Douglas B
Sitting with your leg straight out in front of you, grab your leg with both hands right above the knee. With your fingers find the cords in the back of your knee. You should find two on the inside, one on the outside and one half way up on the outside of your leg. With your fingers, pull up hard into all of these cords at the same time and hold. Now relax, take a deep breath and exhale, and don't tense up any part of your body, including your arms. Let them rest while your hands and fingers do all the work. After about 45 seconds, very slowly start to bend your knee while still maintaining the pressure on the cords. If you run into pain, stop if it feels really bad, but if you can go past it without it getting really bad, continue. When you have your knee bent all the way, keep it going right under your chair for a full extension of the knee. Once as far as you can go, release the pressure on the cords and let your leg rest there for one minute. If you were able to get it to go all the way, it should be good to walk on.

cure for ankle pain while running?

cure for ankle pain while running?OK so i am 14 years old, 115 pounds, and 5 feet 10 inches tall.
and for as long as i remember, every time i started a sport season, about 1-2 weeks after practices started i get really bad ankle and sometimes knee pain and its gotten worse as i got older.
the pain will usually go away or at least get more bearable 3-4 weeks after the pain starts. But thats too long and it hurts too much.

for example football started 2 weeks ago and i signed up for the third year.
i got new cleats and i bought a Dr. Sholes sports insole, the cleats aren't too small either so that's not the problem.

but like always 2 weeks after practices start i have really bad ankle pain when i sprint, and since practice is pretty much nonstop sprinting it hurts really really bad, after i sprint i can barely even stand up because of the pain.

please please help me i like sports but i can't stand the pain anymore.

- jklmnop
i have the same problem so i got heel cups there really soft...if it hurts really bad u may want 2 consider getting custum orthodics or go 2 the foot doctor the regular doc couldnt tell me wut was rong till i went 2 the foot doctor they will tell u wut u need

How can I fix my knee problem?

How can I fix my knee problem? My right knee started having issues about half a year ago. I'm 25 and slightly underweight.
When I bend my knee and sit down, like fixing the floor, it is rather painful in the inner portion of the knee. Also when I, say, lie down on the floor on my back and bend my right knee, I hear some clicking or popping sound.
I went to orthpedic surgeon, had multiple X-rays and MRI. He found no structural damage and offered therapy. My insurance won't cover therapy, so I don't feel like wasting any more of my money (my portion of MRI cost me over $ 200). I bought a book and it provides some stretching and strengthening exercises. I was doing them for a while and I thought there was some improvement. But tonight I was putting new wallpaper in my bathroom, had to bend my knees again - and the pain came back.
Is there anything I can do to figure out the cause of pain and/or eliminate it?

- crowfeathers
All I can say is knees heal slowly. I had a problem like yours and it took at least 6 months for it to heal. I think the stretching exercises are good

Knee Disorders: Female- I woke up with ACHING knees!!!?

Female- I woke up with ACHING knees!!!?I'm almost 24. Not overweight, but a little out of shape. I don't do much physical activity during the day, definitely nothing that would cause strain. This morning I woke up with my knees hurting soooo badly that I couldn't even bend them. Both of them, the same amount of pain. It's on the upper part of my knee, almost like it's the muscle ABOVE the joint.
Here are some things that have been different lately:
1. Wednesday I came down with the stomach bug for a day.
2. I started my period on Thursday, 2 weeks early. It was light, but I usually am.
3. Last night I drank an exceptionally large amount of grape juice. It was just so delicious.

Anyone know why my knees would be hurting so bad this morning that I can't hardly walk??

If you have any other questions, I will answer them in the details section. Thanks!

- Fincgrad
I am not exactly sure, but it sounds like possible loss of nutrients (between the stomach bug and the period). I typically have knee pains when I'm on my period too. Try taking an iron supplement, it tends to help a bit.

Joint Pains -- A Chinese Herbal Prescription (12)

JOINT PAINS - - A Chinese herbal prescription. Everybody has suffered from joint pains one time or another except those at very young age. Causes of joint pains: • Age will definitely worsen your joint pains. • Overexertion in work, sports or other activities. • Overexposure to cold, wind and damp such as insufficient clothing to protect the body against the elements. • Not enough rest due to work, travel, and other activities. • Sudden change in weather especially humidity. • Uric acid from food, known as Gout in Western medicine. • A previous joint injury may result in periodic pains after recovery. • Flu or cold can cause temporary aches and pains, which will disappear when the flu passes. Nature of joint pains: • Long-term condition subject to occasional flare-ups triggered by the causes described above. • Aging causes more pains, possibly deformation of joints too. • Joint pains accompanied by swelling are more serious. • Very difficult to cure joint pains completely. Expect only improvements in the following areas: intensity of pains, duration, degree of swelling if any, and the frequency of flare-ups. • A certain degree of tiredness always accompanies the pains. • Painkillers or numbing with ice can only reduce the pains but cannot get to the roots of the problem. Knee Disorders: Dull aching pain in knee and also in foot?

Dull aching pain in knee and also in foot?It feels as though my left leg from my knee down is aching like i've been walking on it for days, but i have not. I also have what feels to be knot in my calf. Any suggestions as to whether or not I should be concerned?

- Your buddy old pal
It doesn't seem like it is very bad. The knot in you calf should be massaged all the time at least once a day. Be careful not to run around and jump. Pretty much, do little exercises with your calf. However, with your knee, I am not sure about. Ask a doctor.

- Douglas B
You are asking about the two main pains that come from the tendons of your muscles in going to your foot. The tendons can shorten themselves up and give you pain. When you release them the pain should be gone:
Achilles tendon:
With that foot in your lap, take both your hands and place them on the back of the tendon about one inch apart at ankle level. Press the tendon hard between your fingers and thumbs and hold that pressure there. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don't tense up any part of your body. After 30 seconds slowly raise the front of your foot as far as it will go. Then remove the pressure but hold your foot there for one minute longer.
Front tendon: (shin splints)
With the leg pulled up into your lap, take the arm on the same side as the leg and wrap it around the leg just above ankle height, thumb behind the leg and fingers round the front. As your fingers go around the front and rest on your leg, they should feel the big bone down the front. When you put your fingers over the front of it and you wiggle your foot, you should feel the tendon right next to the bone. Press your fingers on it and hold. Take your other hand and bring it in from under your leg. Place your fingers so they go away from the ones already there positioning them more away from you. Again if you wiggle your foot you will find the other tendons that have to be released. Press hard on all of them and hold. Relax take a deep breath and exhale and don't tense up any part of your body. After 30 seconds, slowly lower your foot as far as it will go. Remove the pressure but hold your foot there for one minute longer.

Go see a doctor. It could be a blood-clot.

knee pain diagnosis needed ASAP!?

knee pain diagnosis needed ASAP!?Okay, bare with me here.

I'm having pain in my LEFT knee. I have never directly injured this knee outside of slight twists. (nothing in the past 5 years). I have had this leg reconstructed.

The pain I am having is directly in the middle of the knee. I can touch the outside of the cap without pain, but if I touch the cap, the pain is excruciating. I also have trouble bending my knee up or down. When I rest, it's okay. When it's set, it's fine> it's the physical motion of bending that causes pain.

Any ideas?

Maybe you tore a ligament? Please go to a physiotherapist ASAP

- Dea B
since u've already had reconstruction on the knee it is possible that u could have broken up some scar tissue and possibly re loosened the ligaments. I would go to ur Doc and have them take a look

- Elvira M
I just had knee surgery in May. I had the same problem that you had. I had torn tissue between the bones in my knee. That can be caused by literaly anything. The only way the doctor found the problem (after 2 years) was by sending me to have an MRI. The results were clear. Best of luck

Could be Patellofemoral syndrome, it's the term used to describe pain on and around the patella or kneecap. A common cause is damage to the surface underneath the kneecap. It can be started by an impact or it gradually comes on from rubbing on the bone underneath. The injury is often referred to as chondramalacia patellae, patella pain syndrome or runner's knee.

What can I do about the pain in my knees?

What can I do about the pain in my knees?Whenever I walk, I have a lot of pain in my knees. When I wake up in the morning and stand up, I feel SO much pain in my knees. Also, I can hear this cracking sound when I move my leg. Another thing, my leg feels very stiff when I stand for a long time. Does anyone know any remedies or good medicine for the bones or for this pain? I already take advil and it doesn't help.

- puerile
Ah, I don't see that you have tried prayer.

- Wendy ツ
Try Ibuprofen. Because your knees are cracking that means that they are probably inflamed, and the ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory. I have some pretty bad knee pains because of the knee condition I recently had diagnosed, and it helps calm the pain when I have bad days. Don't use it too much though, because in the long run that medication isn't that good for you.
You could go get it checked out by a doctor. I finally did, and after a couple of x-rays and a good examination, I was recommended physiotherapy, and after about 2 months I'm definitely feeling less pain. Maybe you should go see your doctor and he'll know what to do for you.

Hope that helps!
Your pain sounds like what I had and still do have.

Well, you don't mention your age or your weight and both of these are important if you want suggestions. You could take glucosamine chondrointin and it does help but it takes quite some time before you'll notice results so you should try different OTC pain relievers until you find one that works for you. Also, if you are overweight, lose it! - your knees will thank you. However, if you have advanced arthritis you may be headed towards a knee replacement but wait until you simply can't stand the pain before doing this (docs won't do it too soon anyway) because the replacements don't last beyond 15-20 years and you have to re-do them. If none of the above helps, see your doctor, or just do that anyway.

How can I get rid of a sore knee?My left knee just started getting painfull about a week ago and when I wake up in the morning it's perfectly fine but later in the day when I walk fast or run my knee gets sore again. How can I fix it

- martina s
Soak a small towel in warm-hot water and wrap it around your knee. Massage your knee while the towel is on your knee.
Or put a cold ice pack on your knee and wrap the ice pack with a small towel :D
If these suggestions do not improve your knee consult a doctor :)

military discharge because of knee issues?

military discharge because of knee issues?could i get discharged from the air force because the military doctor finds i have un fixable knee problem?

- Chrys
yes

- ladystang
yes

- Jerry
It depends on what type of problem it is. I have had knee problems forever it seems like. I wasn't discharged for it. The Army attempted to fix it. I was given a profile to do an alternative for the P.T. Test. I was allowed to retire, because that is what I wanted to do. I was even given up chits for flight duty. When I retired I was given 20 % for each knee from the VA, but with VA math its not 40%. That's is a question that only VA knows.

But it all comes down to you. I wouldn't let them discharge me. Get the problem fixed and documented for later. Stay in and retired
