Ah, I've had an experience with this. I've dealt with knee pain since I was in high school. I'm 37 now. The pain became noticeably worse after I turned 32. Two years ago I became a vegetarian and my knee pain has vanished, for the most part. It still hurts if I sit on my legs or climb tall, tall stairs. Maybe it had to do with not eating meat or eating more veggies. I really think it was cutting out red meat and using a lot more organic foods and milk.

Good luck.

Knee Disorders: How can you stop knee pain?

How can you stop knee pain?I am having terrible knee pain and after seeing two orthopedic doctors they still don't know what is wrong. I would get pains at the most random times. It didn't hurt when I walked or moved the joint, but at random times it would flare up and I would fall to the ground in pain. I took countless painkillers, iced it and nothing helped. Does anybody have any ideas on how to help this?

Knee Disorders: Anyone know any good knee rehab exercises?

Anyone know any good knee rehab exercises?I had a pretty major meniscus tear underwent surgery and want to start training again. I had some rehab at a therapy center before summer but hadn't had anytime to continue. I'd like to start some exercises at home before I begin any hard workouts. Any help or advice would be great!

- matthew c
Do Not start phys therapy on your own. you will permanently mess your knee up. If you can walk without "wincing in pain" try to start loosening up with short walks. You dont have to train with your phys therapist, just have a consultation and evaluation. he/she will give you exercises to do for strength.

- David W
I would reckon that swimming must be one of the best exercises, but of course you can't do that at home unless you are rich.
For home exercises, I would look at Hatha Yoga. There are many forms, and many types of exercise - I am sure you can find plenty which feel comfortable. If you learn all about yoga, not only will your body benefit, but your mind also

- duchefse
Remember the two Olympic figure skaters that didn't get along?
I remember when Tonya Harding's boyfriend hurt Nancy Kerrigan's knee, the doctors had Nancy riding an indoor exercise bicycle as therapy for her knee.
Perhaps an indoor exercise bicycle will help your knee, too. Good luck.

- bobanswers
Physical therapy is the best route for you to take, but as you mentioned your schedule's gonna be tight.
You can ask them what they recommend you do at home. Usually, they will prescribe you a group of maintenance exercises. Also, be specific in asking them, and remind them which meniscus you tore - medial or lateral, and what type of surgery was done - repair or removal - as these play a factor on what treatments they give you. Lastly, tell them what your goals are (ie, what are you training for - basketball, football, etc).
The general prescribed exercise for someone in your situation would involve stretching to retain or improve range of motion, and isometrics - contracting the muscles around the knee (quads, hams, calves - with or without resistance) because knee integrity pretty much comes from the muscles around it. Do the latter in different ranges of your knee - extended, partially bent, and flexed. Most important range is the partially bent btw. You will be progressing from here to walking, skipping, etc., but that's down the line. Oh, and don't forget to use hot packs before, and ice packs after your exercises.
Swimming is really good too, if you have access to a pool as the water will provide stretching and strengthening at the same time. But always do them outside the water too.
Again, best is to consult your PT for exercises at home. It's not going to be pretty if you damage other structures around your knee.

Does acupuncture help knee pain?

Does acupuncture help knee pain?I am 48 years old and have injured my knees - worn down from years of athletics, but the turning point was lifting too much weight on the leg press machine. Both knee caps are now tilted as a result. I have lost mobility, have pain every day, hear crackling, popping, clicking, etc. I am currently in physical therapy for the 3rd time. I have seen orthopedists - one would operate, the other is conservative and says not at this time. At this point I am considering alternative therapies - thank you to anyone who has comments or advice!

- Katie
Acupuncture has been proven to work through placebo effect only. In other words, it will trick your brain into thinking you've received a legitimate pain-management technique, and this will stimulate the brain to produce your body's own natural pain killers. It would be cheaper to just take a sugar-pill; you'd do better to not waste your money on woo like this.

- Curious George, C.Ac
Acupuncture can often treat knee pain very effectively, and help restore function. Depending on the amount of damage present in the knees there will be an impact on how long the treatments manage the pain. Be aware that acupuncture is not going to "fix" the structural damage, it will only help manage the pain.

Recent studies utilizing MRI and PET scans show discernible differences in activity in the pain centers of the brain when acupuncture is compared to proposed placebo methods.

What are the best ways to prevent knee injuries?

What are the best ways to prevent knee injuries?I play a lot of "flat ground sports" that involve a lot of running. I recently noticed that more of my friends are getting knee injuries and one of my friends has permanent damage! What should I do to prevent this from happening to me?

- Dr. K
Simple warm up exercise. Walk on the ball of your feet for about 5 mins, on outside of your feet for 5 mins, inside of your feet, tippy toes, then walk backwards. This will strengthen the ligaments and muscles of your ankles and knees, and you'll notice that not only your risk of injury has reduced, your ability to run or any other foot work has increased a bit.

Unexplained leg swelling, pain, knee joint pain......?

Unexplained leg swelling, pain, knee joint pain......?I have unexplained 10 lb weight gain, both legs swelling and very sore to touch, tibia pain, and knee pain. I run/walk 2 miles daily if my pain is tolerable. The only med I take is Questran for unexplained diahrrea. I had a strange week of coughing blood(100 cc's at a time, about 6 times). I have elevated CEA levels, but a clear colonoscopy. CT's and ultrasounds prior to the swelling have shown nothing that I can link to it.... I drink 2 liters of water daily along with other fluid intake, so I know it's not lack of H2O. I was trying to link all this together prior to the swelling/leg pains, and was getting nowhere. Now I have the new symptom of water retention, and it's going to drive me crazy!
Is ther anyone out there that can give me a good guess as to what it is that's doing this to me????
BTW, I am a 36 year old female. I don't smoke.
Dont' know if it applies, or even makes a difference, but here are some more odd items about me....
I have had unexplained bleeding from both breasts. I was told that I have a 3mm nodule in my lung that they are going to monitor... this was found by CT, but it does not show on lung xray. I drink approximately 3 beers a day. My weight is ok, thought it is over my norm by at least 10 lbs.... was 123 last year, but was up to 144 last month. I started my walk/run at that point, and lost about 5 lbs. Oh, I passed my TB test they gave me during the coughing of blood episode.
Family history of cancers.... Bone cancer (father's mother), Non Hodgkins Lymphoma (father), endometrial cancer (mother), breast cancer both sides (mother's mother and father's sister), colon cancer (mother's brother). Everyone has died from these items except my uncle with colon cancer.
Sorry, but gout does sound right. Next answer please.....
I meant to say gout does NOT sound right

- Doc
Gout, and /or phlebitis. I have nothing against beer, but it's not for you. Switch to another beverage, non alcoholic, as you are toxifying sensitive areas in the colon, and it is being absorbed into you blood, taxing your liver, and producing higher levels or uric acid.

See a nutritionist, but don't spend alot of money. Just change what's necessary in the diet, from the supermarket.

- mel
could be gout, my mum had it in her ankle and I did not know what it was at first, with you coughing up blood could it be a clot? I think you need a doctor to give you a good check up and do not leave until you have an answer, it could be an allergy, too much salt, possibly too much water as it can put a strain on your kidneys , could be a reaction to a medication you are on, the list is endless really.

There are several possibilities for what could be causing the weakness and stiffness in the knees such as arthritis (an example only).

However, I would recommend seeing your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they say.

Undetectable/nearly undetectable injuries...(knee pain)?

Undetectable/nearly undetectable injuries...(knee pain)?Well I hurt my knee about a year ago, the doctor said I had a himotoma in it, now my knee is completely numb on the inside where I hurt it. The other day I was playing soccer and I fell on it and now it hurts really bad and it feels tight and stiff, but there isnt really and bruising. Today I went in for an MRI and they said everything looked alright, so either it is bone, or its not detectable?? I barely fell on it so I highly doub its a bone injury. Are there injuries out there that are very hard to prove you have cuz my doctor acted like it was just a little deep bruise.

Right now my knee is in pain, its stiff, but is still has a lost of touch to it, still feels numb even tthough it hurts. What happened?

- cyberthunder9000
If your knee is stiff and numb then there is a problem. Go to a physiotherapist to get it checked. S/He would give you some exercises which would restore it back to normal.

Is there any medication to take to strengthen the knee?

Is there any medication to take to strengthen the knee?I tore my ACL and meniscus a while back. I decided not to get surgery. Are there any supplemental meds or pills you can take to strengthen your knee? I've been taking glucosamine tablets twice a day which are supposed to strengthen your bones and joints. Just wanted to see if there is anything out there on the market that can be more helpful?

- Auld Git
The only way to strengthen the knee is by exercise. Ask your doctor for a referral to a Physio Therapist and swimming also helps. Supplements don't do anything in the short term and even then will not strengthen the joint.

The Movement and The Sixties: Protest in America from Greensboro to Wounded Knee

It began in 1960 with the Greensboro sit-ins. By 1973, when a few Native Americans rebelled at Wounded Knee and the U.S. Army came home from Vietnam, it was over. In between came Freedom Rides, Port Huron, the Mississippi Summer, Berkeley, Selma, Vietnam, the Summer of Love, Black Power, the Chicago Convention, hippies, Brown Power, and Women's Liberation--The Movement--in an era that became known as The Sixties. Why did millions of Americans become activists; why did they take to the streets? These are questions Terry Anderson explores in The Movement and The Sixties, a searching history of the social activism that defined a generation of young Americans and that called into question the very nature of "America." What are some good ways to relieve knee pain?I'm going to the amusement park with my friend tomorrow and lately my knees have been killing me. I noticed that heat helps so I'll definitely get some bengay or something.

i have a bad knee from 10 years dance

try heat. also icy hott can work well for on the spot relief

- 360 Foot Care
Knee pain can be attributed to many different things. Teenagers can have knee pain due to growth spurts. Pain can come from starting new activities like a job or sports etc. If you have not had any event that would have caused the pain you might want to do something to take stress off of the knee. Sometimes arch supports will provide joint alignment and this will allow the knee to operate more efficiently. Sometimes wearing good shock absorbing shoes can work. Other than taking some sort of pain medication there may not be much else that you can do before tomorrow. Be careful about taking medication though. There are always consequences if too much is taken or if it is taken too long a period.

P.S. On a long term basis there is a great shoe, Spira, that has springs in them. They are the best absorbing shoe around. Can be found at www.360footcare.com

I have a torn meniscus, how can I reduce the pain and regain control of my life?

I have a torn meniscus, how can I reduce the pain and regain control of my life?I hurt my knee a couple of months ago and have been having major problems since. They finally discovered through MRI that it's a large meniscus tear and was going to surgically repair it. Unfortunately, surgery has been put off for a month.

I still have serious issues with pain and difficulty walking. Does anyone have any suggestions to help this heal on it's own? If I have to wait a month anyway, is there any chance of not needing the surgery at all by that time?

- devon1754
You could try to rub some Arnica oil on the affected area. It helps to reduce the pain and will soak right into your skin. It helped me when my knee hurt but my meniscus wasn't torn... Hope you feel better!!

- ahhchoooo
Not sure about your case, but I have a torn meniscus as well. There are days it hurts and days it does not, I opted actually not to do surgery as I can live with it and have other knee problems on top of this that would make the surgery complicated and a bit risky to knee mobility on the other side. I would say that the best thing for me is ibuprofen on its bad days and icing it and resting it on its bad days.. Otherwise I live a pretty normal life.. probably 80% of the time

- needy
mine is torn as well.i do not have insurance so i can not have it repaired....every 6 months i get a cortisone shot...it helps some what....good luck to you !!

- Madrox
Ive had crappy knees (and joints) for years. I take a glucosamine supplement daily. It takes a while to work so it wont be an overnight thing but it will be something that will help you as long as you take it. Take the liquid form, at night right before bed if possible for the best absorption. Otherwise for the short term take anti-inflammatory meds. Also: you may look at some compression braces to wear at night. I did that and it seemed to help it heal quicker...they are fairly cheap.

- Dennis R
If you have a large tear in the meniscus then the only way to back back to normal is to have surgery to repair it. You can take some of the stress of the meniscus and put yourself in good position after the surgery if your strengthen your leg muscles. Some exercises to try are: straight leg raises in 4 different directions- lie on your back and lift your leg 6 inches off the floor and hold 10 seconds, repeat 20 times...then lie on your side and lift the leg up and do the same as above, lie on your other side and do the same and finally on your stomach and do the same. Hope that helps

sore knee?i have a really sore and painful knee. its not like a pulled muscle or anything. it hurts on and off but when it hurts it hurts really bad and its sore to walk. any ideas whats wrong??

- J.R.
You may have just a slightly sprained knee. What you wanna do is rest it, maybe ice it, and just take it easy. Dont be trying to lift any weights, do any cardio.

- wisam k
u should see a doctor cuz ppl have weak bones and they can break fast like my grandmother she has weak bones and can walk by her self so get it checked

- Rosa
Baby girl please have that checked out by a doctor a.s.a.p and make an appointment today. And, put moist heat on it if you can. If you don't have a moist heating pad take a really long warm bath with Epsom salt. It will help relief some of the inflammation. And, call your doctor and see if there is any type of off the self meds you can take before you get to your doctor's appointment. Keep your knee raised too on a foot stool or something like that. Good luck and take care of yourself while waiting for the doctor's appointment.

- Gymnast101
The best thing to do is just ice it for about 10 minutes each night. After a few days if it is still hurting then maybe you should see a doctor.

Are my stiff knees related to sunburn or kayaking?

Are my stiff knees related to sunburn or kayaking?I went kayaking for my first time yesterday, and it was SO much fun! But I didn't put enough sun block on, and i got sunburned so badly that i couldn't go to school today. my knees are so sore - they're stiff as! - and i don't know whether it is because of being in the inflatable boat thing or sunburn. i was sitting with my legs outstretched when i wasn't sitting cross legged.

- susan
Your knees are sore from kayaking. You held them in awkward positions for a long time. Tale some ibuprofen. Normally I would suggest a hot bath but not with the sun burn. Try icing your knees but don;t put the ice directly on the skin cover it with something like a thin towel. For the sun burn get some green aloe vera gel and put it in the refrigerator and use regularly.

KNEES HURT ! ! ! ! ! ! ?

KNEES HURT ! ! ! ! ! ! ?I am in 8th grade. I play ALOT of basketball. My knees are killing me. Some days it will be my left, somedays my right, sometimes both, but my left hurts the most. They never hurt during basketball games, but after the games sometimes i can barely walk. They just feel twisted or something. I do ice them, and that helps a little bit. Besides icing, is there any way to help make the pain go away?

dont play basketball for a while and eat a better diet

- owlcroft
Try resting them for a few days. Don't play basketball at all and see if the pain diminishes or disappears. If it does, then you know the cause of the problem. If it doesn't, see your school nurse and explain what's going on.

Good luck!

The knees take the "hit" for a misaligned pelvis or misaligned feet. very rarely is the problem actually in the knee.

Go see a chiropractor. If you are having knee pain after doing a lot of activity ( like playing B-ball), the problem is usually in the feet. A misalignment in the feet can cause an abnormal pulling on the muscles in the legs, which then pulls on the knees causing pain.

In my internship, I have seen patients that have had similar problems and with 1 foot adjustment, all there pain is relieved. It does not happen with everyone, but it happens with many patients.

We have it in Ireland so i presume there would be a group in the US as there is also one in the UK, like the red cross it's probably world wide, they have veterinary surgeries for people on lower income.
SPCA groups will usually charge the same as most vets.

Knee Pain Management?

Knee Pain Management? My left knee is hurting horribly right now. In April 2006, during the 4x100 relay for the state Track and Field semifinals, I twisted my knee but kept going on it (we won our heat but lost overall). I saw my doctor and he said it was fine. Then in April of this year, I was on vacation in Greece and I tripped while climbing the Acropolis--it had rained heavily the night before and had sprinkled that morning, so the marble steps were very slippery. I landed so I could catch my camera and not smash it on the ground (that would suck!), but in the process I landed the bad knee on the step. A piece of bone chipped off and it hurt like hell, but I was a minor in a foreign country with no money for medical treatment. After a few days it felt fine. In July I was in Ocean City, MD for a week, and twisted the same knee playing golf (always the left) and it hurt like crazy for a week afterwards (thankfully I did it on the last day). I saw the doctor after each time, and each time he has said it was okay, however the pain is worse and worse each time.

Then today I had the worst pain I've ever felt, worse than crushing 3 of my fingers in a door when I was 9 and nearly had to have 2 of them amputated. I was hanging cabinets with my cousin in my grandmother's kitchen, and when I stepped off the ladder I twisted the knee again and the bone chip (yep, it's still there) got into it. I could not move my knee for awhile without being in excruciating pain, and now it still hurts like hell and I can't move it all the way, only about half as much as I should be able to. What can I do to keep this from happening again and again, and to keep the pain down? This pain hurts like crazy and lasts longer and longer each time. At this rate I'm going to need a replacement by the time I'm 25!

- Jeffrey
You need to have X-Rays. After they check those, you will need an MRI. I'm going through the same thing. It first happened to me in 2007...now it has happened several more times and keeps getting worse. If I'm not careful, it locks and I can't straighten it out. The worst was a few weeks ago and it wouldn't straighten for days. I had to be on crutches and could not even limp on it. Get your doctor to check it out. You may need surgery. I'm getting an MRI this week to find out about mine. The only thing you can do is be careful until you get the tests done. I wear a slide on adjustable knee brace I got from CVS. It helps when I'm working out.

Aching Knees?

Aching Knees?I've gotten knee aches for as long as I can remember, I haven't had any injuries that would have caused this. It mostly happens at night time or when I get really tired. When I was younger it was so bad that I would cry and my mom would have to come in and massage them. She said they were growing pains but I'm 24 now and I'm pretty sure I'm done growing. Any suggestions as to what's causing them?

What is the best treatment for knee inflammation???

knee inflammation
by _ado

What is the best treatment for knee inflammation???I recently went through all the hassels of finding out that my knee is inflamed. Did the x-ray and MRI just to find out that this is all that is wrong with it. Don't get me wrong, it hurts and is killing my flexibility. I'm taking about 6-9 ibuprofens a day to help, but what is the best way to get rid of this problem?? Does stretching and excersise help?? Any and all advice appreciated.

- Paul B
cod liver oil, glucosamine sulphate, some rest. Try changing your footwear, things like cheap trainers aren't worth the effort. Also try not to rotate the knee too far, it's not meant to twist far.

- mastapes21
It's a long process I am going through the same thing. Take a lot of IB profen it's good for inflammation. Go to the gym and work your quads, eat bannanas. Lay on your back put your hurt leg in the air and try to bend it down as much as possible. It's going to hurt you have to try to get over the pain. Every time you bend it try to make it go lower and lower. This will help but you have to work with it and do everything your told to do.

I ran 3.5 miles yesterday and my knees are sore that it hurts to walk up or down stairs. Does anyone know why and would this problem call for knee surgery in the future?

I'm in good shape, but my knees just took a toll.

- confused
make sure you have a good pair of running shoes. NIke shocks are really good and will cost about 100-125

- Male trauma nurse
It sounds like they can be your shoes.are they new? if not i would stop running until you see a doctor.

- deathnight126
The shoes do matter but the knees are just something that your body does to tell you that your legs are tired!!!

- Neerdowellian
Yes, it is bad to get knees that sore. You probably should try exercises with less impact on your knees. Speed walking, bicycling, or swimming would be much better for you.

- yvette
i think you need to go and check for a doctor, sometimes knees or other section of your body hurts is because of the weather changes and the tireness... and or you got hurt on that spot specifically... then if you over do exercise, it might hurt. you need to see a doctor, and drink maybe pain remover, and or go to a specialist to masage your knee it works, because my spin got hurt before and it really do works after a good masage...good luck

Knee Injury Symptoms?

Knee Injury Symptoms? We had some training for combat today. Someone shoved me hard enough that i fell. When this happened i somehow hurt my knee. It didn't hit the floor so i know it's not just bruised. Within 15-20 min. it had begun swelling. I needed to finish the training for the certification so i did. After wards of course the swelling had gotten worse and my knee began to hurt even more. It feels very weak. There's a shooting pain just around the area and across my knee if i move it a little. When i walk it's not only painful but stiff. Everything feels very tight and at the same time as though it might break in half if i put too much weight on it. Most of the pain is on the outer side of my right knee. there's some pain on the inner area. It's also below my knee cap. I'm wondering what this could possibly be. I intend on going to the doctor tomorrow but i read that due to pain and swelling there might not be much he can do until that subsides a bit. I was reading about ACL's but the area appears to be more around the lateral meniscus, of course i was looking at a picture and have no real knowledge of knees.

- David B
stiff and painful is usually a sign of a sprain or strain...torn structures will usually make it feel "unstable," like it wont hold in one or another plane of motion. RICE therapy would be appropriate...rest, ice, compression (ace or such,) elevation. After the 1st 24 hours, then heat.

- panoramaortho
There are any number of things that could have happened. Did you hear or feel a "pop"? That would point towards ACL. Immediate swelling also points to ACL. Sometimes the pain can be difuse enough that it's difficult to pinpoint the origin. It could also be medial or lateral meniscus or medial or lateral collateral ligaments. It's really hard to say just based on your description but the doctor can do some simple (note I said simple, not painless) tests to see where the injury is and then a MRI will confirm or rule out the diagnosis. In the meantime, use R.I.C.E.- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (and some ibuprofin if you can take it) to help reduce the swelling and make an evaluation easier. Good luck!

Why does a knee need a knee cap?

Why does a knee need a knee cap?If anatomical pictures of the structure of a knee, you will see that the femur and tibia are connected with ligaments. And the patella (knee cap) is in place over the connection of the two. But it seems like there really isn't a need for the knee cap even with the leg bent back as far as a human can bend it.

- steppage
i would assume it would be to protect the joint (since it is one of the most used and easily injured joint on the body)

Knees hurt?

Knees hurt? When I play sports or run alot my knees begin to hurt. Its not really my knees but the top of my legs and the lower of my knees. What is the problem. I use to run a 4.8 in the 40 dash and now I run a 5.2. Is it my diet?

- mariahcareylover
well just exercise or go talk to your doctor and see what he prefers

- natispikes
It's your patella or the ligaments around it. THis happens to a lot of runners, eventually your ligaments are overused. Sometimes it can be the shoes your using, supposedly it's recommended to change shoes every 3 months

- versantly
try glucosamine daily and see your doctor. running is very hard on knees.

- crafty lady
its likely to be the tendons and ligaments that support the knee

ultimately you will need to build the strength of the knee up a good start is the well used straight leg raises which involves straightening the leg by tensing from the top of your thigh down tightening your quads which are the group of muscels thatsupport the top of the knee or patella working down extend your heel toes up and lift

dont be in a hurry to lift it up too high it works it harder lifting a little and holding it do about 10 per hour and if you have had nothing more than tired muscles then do the same but turn your foot in before you raise

this is a very safe exersice but you must tell anyone who treats you what you have been doing so they can factor this in when assessing the strength of your knee

good luck and dont train too hard until you have this sorted

How can I strengthen my knee in general?

How can I strengthen my knee in general?I play tennis and basketball and have noticed my knees (especially left knee) the next day are sore. I wear an ankle brace to keep it tight on my knee. I also bike to class/around town. All these activities make walking up & down stairs difficult because they feel 1) sore and 2) weakened.

My question is what can I do to alleviate my aches, strengthen my knee, or prevent problems in the future? Thanks in advance everybody!

- laniirene
i do a lot of knee strengthening excersises because i am a ballerina and i have been doing it since i was three. i went to a doctor and he said that my knees aren't weak, they are worn out. i did soccer, but i am taking a break from it because i am wearing out my knees (by that i mean working them too mcuh without enough breaks). ur knees are most likely strong, it's just you need a little break from being on your feet and putting pressure on them.

hope this helps, hun! (:

I can see that you're not a professional, that's for sure. Your coach would have told you about strength training if you were a pro.

Squats! Squats strengthen knees. Squatters have 10X the knee health of a normal person!
Squat three times a week. Nothing moderate, use a pretty heavy load which you can't lift for more than 15 reps, then you rep it for 10 strict, deep reps.

Trigger point therapy is one of the most intriguing and fastest-growing bodywork styles in the world. Medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists are all beginning to use this technique to relieve formerly undiagnosable muscle and joint pain—conditions that studies have shown to be the cause of nearly 25 percent of all doctor visits. The technique involves applying short, repeated massage strokes to trigger points, tiny contraction knots in muscle tissue where restricted circulation and lack of oxygen cause referred pain. Trigger points create pain throughout the body in predictable patterns characteristic to each muscle, producing discomfort ranging from mild to severe. Trigger point massage increases circ

Intraneural Injections for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis with Control of Pain in Arthritis in the Knee

Health professionals learn how to locate sensitive nerve ganglia along the C fibres (C fibres are usually close to surface and are uninsulated). These sensitive spots distribute signals two ways, one to spinal chord and back as a reflex arc and the second to the brain creating heat, swelling, and pain. By injecting a common membrane stabilizing substance at these points, joint pain immediately disappears. Resolution of painful joints controlled by these various nerve ganglia lasts from 3 days up to 20 years depending upon causation of the nerve disturbance.
It is argued that the reflex arc causes more clamping of joints than expansion, thus causing less nourishment to reach cartilage. The cartilage therefore starts decomposing creating

Knee Disorders: What are some things you can do to help with knee arthritis pain?

What are some things you can do to help with knee arthritis pain?

- alwaysmekatie
Hot baths, bend-straighten-bend-straighten. With a gentle massage.
Not too rough, don't want to damage anything inside.

Icy hot patches work amazingly with pain, and last for a while.

Ice it for 15 minutes on and off, when you feel theres inflammation/swelling.

Tape it- start at top, leave middle open, tape around bottom.
This gives it nice support, for doing activities.

Keep elevated when sitting/laying.
Rest!!!
Hope that helps(:

Any mountain bikers know what causes aching knees when riding a new bike?

Any mountain bikers know what causes aching knees when riding a new bike?Could it be the frame size, stem, or seatpost height? For some reason my knees are aching after rides. I'm 5'11" with a 30" inseam. I've been riding MTB for awhile so this injury is surprising to me. Help!

- gregg_bandy
Eat canned smoked oysters, you're probably low on protein and iron.

- AT
A big cause of knee pain is poor riding geometry. Seat too far forward is usually the cause. New bike = different geometry. Also compare crank lengths on old vs. new.

- Liam
I got this until I raised the height of my seatpost. Try that - I understand that is normally the cause. A seatpost that is too low can cause many problems while riding.

- sfr1224
Hum... Well, one possibility is you got a new bike and you are riding it crazy hard. If this is the case, as your conditioning improves your knees should get better.

I am guessing, however, the geometry is different and it is affecting your riding position and causing your knee trouble.

My first suspect is the seat is lower and is changing your pedal stroke. I always like to pull out a tape measure and get a new bike set up pretty much like my old one. Then I adjust here and there until it is exactly right.

Beyond this, there are some other possibilities:

The fore/aft positioning of the seat may be different. This too will affect your pedaling. (Remember, as you raise the seat, it changes the fore/aft positioning of the seat with respect to the pedals.) Also, since you are dealing with a different saddle, its most comfortable spot to sit may be different than the saddle on your old bike. So, you can't merely judge by where the nose of the saddle is relative to your old bike, you need to figure out where the sweet spot is.

If you changed pedal types, you may not have gotten the cleats positioned properly on your shoes.

If the bottom bracket of you new bike is wider, thus making
the pedals further apart, it may bother your knees a bit for a while, as well.

Hope this helps.

- Fred M

You need to see an orthopedic doctor. He then will refer you to physical therapy.

I had a torn cartilage on my right knee as a result of a bad fall. My primary doctor sent me to have an MRI and referred me for physical therapy. After 3 weeks of physical therapy I was scheduled for surgery last week. The surgery was successful. And I am going back to physical therapy to get strength on my knee. Good luck.

Squats are the worse form of exercise to do, it will damage your cartalige even more, i have torn mine and ive been told to, not squat and kneel down, try layin on the floor and move your legs up and down side to side. thats the best option, and of course light walking, but dont push your self to hard!

Best of luck!

Hi,I did the following:

Lifenet Tissue Graft Knee Cartilage

www.nucleusinc.com This 3D medical animation shows arthroscopic surgery on the knee joint to remove free-floating cartilage and replace it with a Lifenet tissue graft. Prior to surgery, the joint is prepared by filling it with fluid. Next, the surgeon inserts an arthroscope in order to visualize the torn meniscal cartilage, and remove the tissue with a cutting tool. Later, a Lifenet tissue graft will be sewn into place.

Knee pain?

Knee pain?I have alot of pain in my left knee, almost constantly, and it's usually swollen. I haven't had an injury to the knee, but I did injure my right knee several years ago. I am wondering if anyone knows of any exercises or anything to help strengthen my knee and to relieve pain? Advil helps some, but I wind up having to take so many that my ankles wind up swelling. Any SERIOUS suggestions or remedies would be greatly appreciated.

You could have tendonitis, I know that's what's wrong with one of my knees and it flares up this time of year. Maybe try scheduling an appointment with a physical therapist.

SWOLLEN, means inflammation, so you really need to see a Doc. You could have a infection in the knee, so best to see the Doc.

Knee Disorders: Meniscus Tear and symptoms?

Meniscus Tear and symptoms? My doctor thinks I have a medial meniscus tear. Right now I have pain on the inner part of my knee, a little swelling and tingling throughout my leg and foot. Is this consistent with a tear? something else? I still have to schedule and MRI but just curious.

- Dr. K
A damaged (micro tears) medial meniscus, and a slightly torn medial meniscus can have the same presentation. A MRI can reveal what you really have.

Painful Knee?

Painful Knee?I have developed a painful knee. Its on my right knee & on the outer side. It feels like the side bone is a lump, but the lump disappeard if I bend my leg, as in the kneeling position. As I straighter it the lump/bone or whatever shows. It's really painful. In bed it's least painful if I lie on my left side for some reason. It bothered me a couple of months age and then just went away but now it's back. I do do a lot of kneeling at work. Anyone any ideas ?.

Better you consult an orthopedic surgeon.

- harryh
Might be a torn meniscus. I just had arthroscopic surgery on mine Tuesday. I am already up without crutches or a limp. My knee would come and go about three times a year for me.
The doctor explained to me that a torn meniscus is kind of like a door mat that gets stuck in and out of a door as it closes. Sometimes it gets caught sometimes it doesn't. First thing you need to do is find a good surgeon (it took me 6 months to find mine- name is Vance Askins-Sarasota, Fl) your surgeon will schedule an MRI, and explain the results.

Twisted knee?

Twisted knee?My husband twisted his knee today. What is the proper way to treat it at home?

- ninamcguinness
I would ice it, and then bandage it. It's important to keep the swelling down, otherwise it will make difficult to walk. For pain, i would recommend Advil, since it is an anti-inflammatory.

Hope he feels better soon.

- ralph d
the proper way to treat a twisted knee is to walk it off and ice it for 15 minutes while it is elevated. it would be best to ice it before you sleep that way you will not walk on it.

- Bonapartess
Tell the truth. He was talking trash and you had to teach him a lesson didnt you?

Keep it elevated, apply ice as much as possible and wrap it up in a bandage to keep it from moving about. It should be okay in a few days. If not, put him down.Or take him to the the doctor. Whichever is cheaper.

Good luck.

- fishineasy
Put ice one it for the first 24 to 48 hours then heat. Keep it elevated and stay off of it. If it is not better in a few days seek medical help.

- Bean
Ok, well he should probably not over use it. Umm, he should ice it for 20 minutes per hour. If it does not go down you may want to go to a doctor. I thought that was all I did, and I tore my meniscus. But don't panic. give it a day or so and if the swelling doesn't go down see a doctor. Hope that I helped
